Oliver, Jr., professor of sociology and psychology at Chapman College, has been invited to present a series of six public lectures on marriage and family living in Downey’s fall. The free lectures are being sponsored by the adult education division of the Downey Unified School District in cooperation with the PTA council and the Downey Junior Woman’s Club. They have been scheduled for six Monday evenings beginning Sept. 23 at the Maude Price Junior High School Auditorium, strengthening the family is the purpose of the series, according to District officials. Dr. Oliver also has been asked to prepare a similar series for presentation later in the fall in Huntington Beach, where they will be sponsored by the public library. “Marriage and You,” written by Dr. Oliver, is scheduled for publication in October by the College and University Press, New Haven, Conn. Hat making will be taught beginning Oct. 8. Mrs. Mathiel Miller, instructor, says students may learn to style hats in the latest fashion and material, using their own supplies or obtaining them from her. Class will meet from 12:30 to 3 p.m. each Tuesday through Nov. 12. Fee for the class is $10.00. An open house for last year's hat makers and new prospects will be at the home of Mrs. John J. Collier on Oct. 1. Sewing Sewing classes, taught by Mrs. Yvette Smith, will meet in three sections. "Sewing Made Easy", a beginning course, will be in two sections — 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., Wednesdays, and 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Tuesdays. The classes continue through Nov. 20, and start Oct. 1 and 2. An advanced sewing class will meet on Wednesday from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. and will emphasize tailoring methods and finishing processes. Fees for sewing courses are $5.00 for each section. Jewelry-Making Albert MacKenzie will instruct students in the ancient art of making silver jewelry and semi-precious stones (or lapidary). The classes will be 7:30 to 10:00 p.m. Tuesdays, October 8 through November 26. Fee is $5.00. An open house for jewelry makers is scheduled Tuesday, Oct. 1, at Spencer House. Available At J.C.
