Rhyme And Reason
By LOUISE METEER
I remember summer. Other summers long gone by;
Summers sweet with twilight,
stars, pale moon, pale sky.
I remember summer. Sound of early morning birds,
Lazy days when heat lay close to stifle breathing;
Great clouds gathered with some giant hand
And clapped in thunderous anger seething.
Now they are gone and with them sights and sounds and people I remember
I briefly savour, treasures to be cherished
And turn away from knowing 'tis September.
The sights and sounds of Yesterday's summers. I would not exchange them for all the so-called green and gold of California. Let this be heresy, the fact is there: summer meant more when it moved swiftly into Autumn, and Autumn into a soft white blanket on a weary land.
Mainly I have loved these seasons because inevitably, they brought the spring. I am an April child, and, if I were wealthy, I'd follow spring around the world! It is as well I can't, even this pleasant state of existence could become my rutil!
Evaluating the value of changing seasons, it seems to me that it was the challenge they offered, the necessity of change, that gave us a greater capacity for living.
Then it would seem that, season or no season there is...
