David L. Baker, Fire Committeeman for the Board of Supervisors, stated that they (the Board) were very pleased with State Forester Francis Raymond's selection for the man to replace Joseph Scherman. Ranger Scherman is retiring after 33 years' service with the California Division of Forestry in Orange County.
Between now and August 30, Osterman will be working with Ranger Scherman. After August 30, Scherman will be engaged in a special study for the Division of Forestry and will be available for counsel during this transition period before his retirement becomes effective this fall.
In making this appointment the State Forester said, "Osterman has done an outstanding job in his present assignment as Fire Prevention Coordinator, and his experience with the Division of Forestry is very broad. I am very pleased that he measures up to the challenging responsibilities of this new assignment. I am appointing him with full confidence in his abilities to handle the reins and maintain a sound operating unit".
In commenting on Ranger Scherman's dedicated career, the State Forester said, "Joe Scherman has served long and well in the State Service and the retirement he soon will be enjoying has been more than earned".
Ranger Osterman was born on a ranch near El Toro and attended Orange County schools. His Forestry career started in Orange County in 1934 as a Dispatcher-Clerk. He advanced through the ranks and in 1939 was appointed Assistant Ranger. This assignment took Osterman to all areas of the State and Nation to further the aims of natural resources conservation and the objectives of a growing Forest Fire Prevention Program. During this period, Osterman worked very closely with governmental agencies, conservation organizations, schools, and all types of business and industry. He handled motion picture productions for fire prevention films and all phases of the news media which is such a vital part of the Fire Prevention Program.
Ranger Osterman's home is now in Santa Ana where he and his wife Lois reside. The Ostermans have a daughter, Mrs. Susan Kliewer, living at Corona del Mar with her husband Tom and two sons.
Ranger Osterman has belonged to and is still active in many civic, conservation and professional organizations.

Shortly after the original purchase of the instrument, talking
pictures became prevalent and by
1930 the organ was obsolete for
all practical purposes. This sleeping giant lay dormant until 1954
when Goodin took over the Orange
Theater and began restoration
work.
He found the large consol in
bad repair. It was filled with
cobwebs and many of its pipes
were missing. As the story goes,
the former manager had given
many of the pipes to theater-going boys to use as exhaust pipes
for their cars.
Thousands of dollars and many man-hours have been poured into the restoration process. Pre-war costs for the model console organ were $35,000. Today, if you could

Goodin said much credit for the restoration work should be given to Russ Nelson, Fullerton, a Ronald Mitchell, Arlington, for repair work they did.
The organ will be played perically during intermissions on reular theater evenings, but wimainly be reserved for concouse.
Bringing this sleeping giant life is a real cultural contribution to Orange and the surrounding area. Organ associations and interested groups all over Los A
