Anaheim Memories
80 Years Ago This Week
This office is indebted to D. W. Thompson for some delicious blackberries grown on his fine ranch in North Anaheim.
It is possible that a cracker factory will be established in Anaheim by our enterprising baker, Mr. E. A. Meek.
Madame Modjeska and party were in town on Monday. They have gone to San Francisco where the madame begins a theatrical engagement on the 7th.
The editor desires to acknowledge the receipt from Leonard Parker of an excellent fish which, when alive snorted in the waters at Laguna, Mr. Parker is noted as being the luckiest fisherman of the hundreds congregated at the resort.
Water in the river continues to be very low. Only one head was flowing in the Santa Ana ditch on Wednesday. The sources of supply this year are lower than any previous time. Even in Los Angeles the demand for water far exceeds the supply. The work of driving piles for the dam in the Santa Ana River began on Thursday.
A brisk northeast wind raised a formidable volume of sand on Monday afternoon on each side of town. For some occult reason not a breath of wind or speck of flying sand distrubed the serenity of Anaheim although the sky was for a time darkened with whirling sand on all sides.

W. J. Hill is threshing grain for Fred Bixby on the latter’s ranch near Long Beach.
N. E. Murphy will open his new restaurant near the post office August 14th. He will call it the Star Restaurant and will make a speciality of serving first class meals at low prices.
Sport Wetzel, formerly a resident of Orange County, is incarcerated in the San Bernardino jai a raving maniac. Advices from that point say he went suddenly insane on Wednesday and after giving battle to Henry DeBois of Los Angeles and a Long Beach man went several miles across the mountains and stampeded the sojourners at Fishers Camp near Bear Valley. For two days he raved until a body of men got together and overpowered him by main force. He will probably be committed to the asylum at Patton.

To Howard D. Mann of Costa Mesa goes the notoriety of being the first person convicted and sentenced for violating the new county dry ordinance, passed July 11 by the County Board of Supervisors. He was caught 24 hours after the law was passed and has been sentenced to serve 90 days in the county jail.
4-H Club members throughout the Southland are busily engaged in rounding up their projects, preparing their exhibits and planning for their camp at the combined Los Angeles, Riverside and Orange County fair in Pomona, Sept.

Major E. E. Upham of Olive was in town the first of the week. Major Upham stands for clean politics and says that republicans up this way are indignant over the action of the county committee in denying them the right to vote at primaries.
The band will give another of its popular open air concerts at the band stand Wednesday evening next.
Hans Weisel has the distinction of being the first local hunter to kill a deer this season, having shot a yearling buck in the San Fernando mountains one day last week, where he and his brother Fred, along with George and Roger Dutton spent several days on a hunting trip.

LONDON (UPI)—Queen Elizabeth canceled her visit to the Royal school in Windsor Great Park Sunday because of an outbreak of chicken pox among the pupils.
The Queen, who was to have presented prizes, called off the visit on advice of her doctor, a palace announcement said.

THE MEASURE OF A MAN
By CAROL BAKER
There comes a time when man starts growing out instead of up — reaching his full physical stature does not necessarily mean that he has nearly grown, because it is at this time that his world is expanding — his horizons broadening — later, experience teaches him to limit his interest in knowledge, to specialize — to train himself for a chosen career. And it is at this time that we take the measure of a man. How well, is he trained? an we depend on him? Does he have good judgement?
A good way to take the measure of a man is to take a look at his habits — because the habits of a man are the key to his character. For example — a man of sound judgment checks in regularly with Harvey's Auto Body and Painting, for a sparkling paint job in their modern shop, at 1109 Raymond Way, in Anaheim. Harvey's Auto Body and Painting, collision repairs, and wreck rebuilding — as well as featuring expert specialized work on Volkswagens, Renaults and Foreign ars. If you are a foreign car owner — why not take the measure of a job done at Harvey's Auto Body and Paintings? You'll be glad you did.
