If Your Cough Can't Be Hid,
Like Love, It's Time to Act
People can get sentimental about the oddest things — including the idea of coughing. The English poet, George Herbert, even gave it a romantic association when he wrote: "Love, and a cough, cannot be hid."
Still, that seems to be the way a lot of people regard coughing. We read about a "little cough," a "gentle cough," a "modest cough." If anybody considers the thing a blamed nuisance, or worse, nobody seems willing to clear his throat and bark out the truth of the matter . . . Well, almost nobody.
Notable exceptions are the editors of Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary, where "frequent repetition of coughing" is defined as a "symptom of disease." This homely statement is a lot closer to the facts, though many people still don't know it.
Actually, "frequent repetition of coughing" isn't always a symptom of disease; at least, it may indicate nothing more serious than the incidental effects or after-effects of a common cold. It's the prolonged repetition of coughing that really raises a danger signal. Because a chronic cough — one that hangs around for a month or more — can be a symptom of that group of unpleasant ailments known as RD—Respiratory Disease.
Respiratory Diseases include many illnesses that affect the breathing system. Some are short-term but potentially serious; others, like emphysema and tuberculosis, are potentially very grave. RD disables more people in this country than any other group of illnesses, and is fourth among causes of death.
If you have "frequent repetition of coughing" that stops a reasonable time, chances are you've got nothing to worry about. But when a cough fits the description of "chronic," it's time to hustle around to the doctor's office and find out just where you stand. Bowers Plans Art Exhibit On Medicine
Visiting physicians, including an Egyptian of 1500 B.C. and a Belgian surgeon of 1500 A.D., will make their "home" at Bowers Memorial museum during the month of July.
The lifelike "visitors" are part of the continuing series of oil paintings, "A History of Medicine in Pictures," commissioned by Parke, Davis & Company as a tribute to the heritage of the medical profession.
The first 40 original oils in this unique series will be shown in the Charles W. Bowers Memorial Museum, 2002 North Main Street, Santa Ana from July 4 through 31.
George A. Bender, project director and the artist, Robert A. Thom, expect it will take another four years to complete this historical collection. Two years of work and research preceded the first painting which appeared in January, 1957. Bender said. The paintings and their stories are being developed at the rate of six a year, and will continue until the subjects are brought up to the present day.
Bender explained that these medical paintings are not mere artist's conceptions, but are authenticated down to the smallest detail.
Each of these paintings is very carefully researched before a brush touches the canvas," Bender added. "However, no painting is considered complete when it first comes off the artist's easel. Each painting is rechecked very carefully with experts in the particular field before it is considered finished."
Hundreds of hours of time and thousands of miles of travel lie back of each of the original paintings now on exhibit. One painting in the series required some 15,000 miles of travel and more than 12 months of investigation before it was considered ready to be shown.
Have you ever noticed an annoying sensation of tightness across the forehead after driving or riding in your car for a while?
If so, you'd better have your car checked immediately. Chances are that some part of the exhaust system, probably the muffler, is damaged or ruined.
The tell-tale sensation of forehead tightness is a clue that deadly carbon monoxide from the auto exhaust is entering your car, an Anaheim authority on exhaust systems, Bernie Miller, warned today.
Other common symptoms are headache, nausea, and dizziness. All can mean trouble in terms of potential serious cases of carbon monoxide poisoning or increased susceptibility to accidents.
Miller who works on thousands of automobile exhaust systems each year as operator of the Midas Muffler Shop, 404 N. Los Angeles, Anaheim, said it doesn't take much damage before a muffler allows carbon monoxide to seep into the passenger compartment, and it doesn't take much carbon monoxide to cause serious "For instance", he said, "in a trouble.
