"Amazingly, many of the first pledges have been for $20 and $25 a year for 25 years," Hartquist reported. "This encourages us to dream we might be able to give USC a half-million dollars in 25 years, although the goal, by class agreement, will officially be $200,000."

Del Mar’s Boys Aid Is Over $1 Million
Well over one million Del Mar Race Track dollars have been contributed for the benefit of boys in general, $800,000 in grants being made in the 24-month period ending January 1, 1962. This was the disclosure today of George A. Scott, Vice President of Boys Incorporated of America.
The whole idea of Boys Incorporated came about in 1954 when J. Edgar Hoover, Clint Murchison, Sr., and Scott met in the La Jolla Clinic located near the race track.
Hoover commented in an off-hand manner that if he had the money earned at race tracks it would be possible to make a great contribution to the reduction of delinquency and to the building of good citizens throughout America.
From this chance remark, Boys Incorporated was born. Murchison and the late Sid W. Richardson provided that 75 per cent of the funds of the corporation shall be used in California or, in other words, in the geographical location where the funds originate. The other 25 per cent may be used or expended for the charitable purpose of Boys Incorporated in any area the Board of Directors determines.
