Albert B. Tieburg, Director of the California State Employment Service, in an open letter to the high school graduates of 1963, today advised them to consider their job futures carefully.
We this jet propelled, automated age of electro-mechanical marvels the high school diploma is not always a passport into the better jobs in a highly competitive labor market," the state official said.
He invited those desiring summer employment to assist them in financing their future education to make contact with the nearest office of the California State Employment Service without delay. Last year the State Employment Service found jobs for more than 154,000 high school graduates and students seeking summer employment.
Tieburg urged high school graduates not planning to continue with higher education to use the counseling, testing and placement services of their local employment office. He called upon employers throughout the state to provide on-the-job training opportunities including apprenticeship wherever possible for the high school graduates entering the labor market.
"Although there is a widespread demand for scientific and other professional workers, it is equally important that we produce workers with adequate training to carry out the many occupational tasks which are necessary in today's complex industrial society," Tieburg concluded.

Dorothy Krol, Manager
I recently learned that telephone research technicians x-ray phone poles to find out how to make them last longer. Each of these poles has been treated with fungus-killing preservative and the x-rays are used on sample borings to show how well the preservative is working. Research like this helps us lengthen pole life and helps hold down the cost of your telephone service.

A patio extension telephone lets you make or take calls outdoors with the same convenience as an inside phone.
In contrast to the modern use of x-rays I just mentioned, some technicians at Western Electric (the manufacturing arm of the Bell System), practice an ancient art. These experts are glass blowers who turn out special glass parts and electron tubes that can't be mass produced. These parts are used in the development and manufacture of new telephone equipment. It just goes to show that it takes all types of skills to keep improving your telephone service.
IF YOU NEED HELP WITH AN EMERGENCY, YOUR OPERATOR IS READY TO HELP RIGHT AROUND THE CLOCK.
WE telephone people were plenty excited early last month when Telstar II was launched from Cape Canaveral by the National Bureau of Statistics and Space Administration. All costs of launching and tracking this communications satellite are being paid for by the Bell System. One of the important purposes for which Telstar II was designed is to see if its useful life can be lengthened by overcoming the effects of radiation in space.
Telstar II has been built with some new transistors designed to withstand radiation damage. In addition, its orbit has a higher apogee (farthest point from earth) than Telstar I. This causes it to spend more time in areas of less intense radiation. I also understand that the higher orbit will enable it to relay communications between the U.S. and a new ground station being built in Japan.
Library Will Get Fed File
WASHINGTON, D. C. — The Anaheim Public Library has qualified as a United States Government Depository Congressman James B. Utt (R-35th) has disclosed.
Carper W. Buckley, U. S. Superintendent of Documents has notified Congressman Utt that the Anaheim system nominated by him is now eligible to receive U. S. publications under the selective plan of distribution ammended by the last Congressional session.
Distribution cannot begin until funds for the expanded program are appropriated Mr. Utt said. The request is part of the legislative appropriations bill currently in committee.
Mr. Utt expects it will be a month before the bill comes to the floor, and later summer before the program is put into action.
Earlier this year Congressman Utt announced the acceptance of the Orange State College Library as the first of two new depositories for the 35th Congressional district. Santa Ana Public Library, named a depository by Mr. Utt for the old 28th Congressional District, continues as a depository for the new 34th district.
Depository libraries receive one copy of all U. S. Government publications except those with no public interest or educational value, marked for official use only, or materials classified for national security.

day the familiar dial will be on its way out.
The main advantages of the new system are speed, ease and convenience of operations. Pacific Telephone estimates a number with seven digits can be tapped out in about five seconds compared with an average 10 seconds on the conventional dial.
The pushbutton models being tested have three rows of buttons each plus a tenth "0" button centered below the bottom row.
Buttons Not New
"Actually, using pushbuttons is nothing new to the nearly 1,000 telephone operators working in Orange County." District Manager Howard R. Heth pointed out. "They've been using a modified version called 'key-pulsing' for nine years."
In this system, operators punch out numbers on buttons, and multiple-frequency electronic signals speed calls on their way around the nation.
