Graduation C Further Schooling is Typical Plan Top High School Grads By LYNN WAGNER Amid nostalgic tears and fond farewells to the alma mater, several thousand high school seniors will venture down the perilous path to the adult world as they accept their diplomas — the valuable key to mary doors — and step into a role of college student or future business leader. The Anaheim Union High School District's high schools will all participate in the Baccaleaureate services to be held at La Palma stadium this year. The featured speaker will be Bob Richards, former Olympic decathelion champion and presetn minister of the Church of the Bretheran. Bob nicknamed the "vaulting vicar," captured U. S. decathelon championships in 1951, '54, and '55. His remarkable athletic ability has led him to win such honors as Athlete of the Year (1951), the Sullivan Trophy (1951), and the Gold Medal in pole vaulting in Helsinki, Finland (1952) and again in Melbourne, Australia (1956). Bob was named one of the Ten Men of the Year in 1950 by the Junior Chamber of Commerce, and he was, at this time, also elected spokesman for the Future Olympic Champions Crusade. Magnolia High School, one of the four high schools in the Anaheim Union High School District, under the direction of Mr. Richard Ryan, graduating class, Gregg Mues and Tamar Tofield were interviewed concerning their interests and plans for the future. Sixteen year old Gregg, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert A. Mues, resides at 1317 Tonia Lane in Anaheim and his senior year has been very prolific. He assumes the duties of president of Speech Club and has been very assiduous in debate. Gregg also appropriates authority over the Honor Society as president. In addition to these duties, Gregg is a member of Focus, a school discussion club and the American Field Service, a program which deals with exchange students. The industrious senior plans to attend the University of California at Berkley. The eldest of four children, Gregg is outnumbered by the feminine gender in his family which includes Debbie, 15; Patricia, 12; and Tracy, 3. Tamar boasts a variety of interest that absorbs her time and energy. She is not only active in a number of school projects, but also at Temple Beth Emet in the youth group and as an assistant teacher in the temple school. She hopes to pursue a chemistry major at UCLA beginning this fall. During the summer months she will be a counselor at Camp NEARING END OF ACTIVITY principal of Western High, goes left in this school year with two quist and Marleen Makino. Savanna High School looks forward to its Commencement speakers, Dan Bates, Diane McWilliams, and Ralph Dawkins, students at Savanna, who will speak at the exercises which will be held Wednesday. June 12 at La Palma Stadium at 8:00 p.m. Mr. Sam Chicas is the principal. Sandy Ball, Savanna senior is Gold Medal in pole vaulting in Helsinki, Finland (1982) and again in Melbourne, Australia (1956). Bob was named one of the Ten Men of the Year in 1936 by the Junior Chamber of Commerce, and he was, at this time, also elected spokesman for the Future Olympic Champions Crusade. For pleasure-seeking motorists, these twisting mountain roads will be safer and more enjoyable for all when drivers heed the "turnout" signs. According to Capt. F. E. Winchell of the California Highway Patrol's Anaheim area, "motorsists often think of 'turnouts' as merely a convenience. Actually, the law requires their use under certain conditions. "'Turnouts' have been installed on two-lane roads to speed the flow of traffic and to reduce the chances of a head-on collision caused by impatient motorists who gamble on passing the car ahead," Captain Winchell pointed out. Whenever a slow moving vehicle impedes the progress of five or more vehicles, the driver must turn off the roadway at an officially designated "turnout". They can be identified by signs one-quarter mile prior to the "tournout" location itself. The Highway Patrol official described slow moving vehicles as vehicles that proceed at a speed slower than normal traffic.
