Metal Vapor Traction
Unique Autonetic
Thin Film Process Developed
To Dwarf Future Radar Parts
Anaheim's Autonetics division of North American Aviation, Inc., has taken a big stride in the little world of microminiaturization, establishing a Thin Film Processes Laboratory for its radar work.
Working in a world of atoms and angstroms, scientists are vaporizing the trail to future radars. Miniature high-frequency circuits of passive elements are being developed by evaporating atoms of metals and depositing their vapor, wavelength thick, on substrates.
The circuits will go into various advanced airborne space radars. Autonetics' initial space radar interest is in the development of a system to provide guidance for critical terminal movements as ships make in orbit. It would also provide lunar landing and return-to-mother-ship docking guidance.

Three Areas Work
The Thin Film Processes Lab provides advanced components support for the new Advanced Engineering Department, and has three areas: vacuum, photo and chemical processing labs.
Also being developed are a standard thin film pre-amplifier, wide band amplifier and huffer amplifier, as well as timing device circuits. Resistors, capacitors and conductors are deposited in three thin layers on a substrate with the micro-active electrode.
