EDITORIAL Do You Fear Identification? “And they that had taken Jesus led him away to the house of Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were gathered together. ‘But Peter followed him afar off—’” Matthew 26:57 This particular passage has long intrigued us. It has seemed as though these words might have been inscribed to describe a large segment of our citizenry today. Perhaps it has been applicable in every age and era but, as we read history, it has seemed as though in other days there were staunch supporters, adequate defenders and waves of citizens ready to battle for the right as compared to the luke-warm attitudes of today. How many Peters do you run across in the course of any day or week? How many persons will you find beating their breast one moment for the cause of justice or deploring the course of events and in the next saying “but, don’t quote me.” or “yes, but what can one person do?” We have all read how Peter, who had just told Jesus that he would never desert him or be offended in him, not only kept at a safe distance as Jesus was led away but, subsequently, in the courtyard of the highpriest, denied he knew Jesus or had any association with him. When the chips were down at various kinds. These are fields of daily interest and are in addition to that one area of concern we believe is supreme in warranting our full effort: the worship of God. But, the point we wish to emphasize is that in all of the areas it is vital for each one of us to concentrate his capabilities to an extent that he may be recognized as a champion of the cause, whatever it may be. We cannot allow ourselves to be torn between an inner belief as to what is right and an outer demonstration of indifference or giving tacit approval by silence or non-action. To continue this dual presentation will destroy us. For it is we who are on trial these days. We are daily being tested and tried. There are attractions in every field of interest that would sway us from the path we have chosen. There are threats that we must “conform” to myrind molds or suffer consequences. If we continue the present-day trend of “going along” with a co-ndition because of some temporary benefit for ourselves we shall soon find we have lost the power to discriminate or the will to defend our discriminations. Remember, it took but a week for the Jerusalem public to change from palm-strewing, bo-sanna-grinding grounds to We have all read how Peter, who had just told Jesus that he would never desert him or be offended in him, not only kept at a safe distance as Jesus was led away but, subsequently, in the courtyard of the highpriest, denied he knew Jesus or had any association with him. When the chips were down at those crucial moments Peter did not want to become involved. We are all equally aware of Peter’s subsequent history. He recovered his resolve, his strength of character and will and did become a "rock" in the founding and spread of Christianity. It is Peter’s recovery that should give everyone of us a hope and belief that we, too, may emulate this phase of Peter’s history as well as that period of "keeping a safe distance." It has always seemed to us this passage has direct application to every facet of living. Utt today urged the citizens of his 55th Congressional District to support California Assembly Joint Resolution 16, introduced by Assemblyman Robert Badham of Costa Mesa. The bill is identical to the Liberty Amendment sponsored by Congressman Utt in the United States House of Representatives. If passed, the California version petitioned Congress to approve the Amendment for ratification by the states. Utt asked that the support shown for his bill at the national level be given to the state version presently before the Assembly. A victory in California, he said, would add great momentum to national sentiment which has developed rapidly since the Administration's 1964 budget and tax proposal were made. The Liberty Amendment has passed the Legislatures of six states and is before several more this year. The bill would: 1. Take Federal government out of all activities except those specified in the Constitution; 2. Keep the Government from entering such activity through atr agreements, laws, edicts, or treaties; 3. Liquidate government-in-business assets, properties, and facilities within three years; and 4. At the end of three years reevaluate Federal Personal Income Taxes.
