"Twist, two, three, four, five, and hold," "Pat" Rhodes counts to her students in a calm rhythmic voice as she leads the members of her "Slim 'n Trim" program in the Brookhurst Junior High School gymnasium.
"The slow deliberate movements and the 10 second hold seem to be more beneficial in the long run," said Mrs. Patricia Rhodes, recreation leader for the Anaheim Parks and Recreational Department.
"Pat" to her students, she says, "The girls tell me that self-improvement is just one of the reasons they sign up for the classes. They also have fun and have a chance to meet other people."
"I myself have benefited from the program. After my second baby arrived, I found I wasn't as slim as I wanted to be. Of course, physical fitness is one thing everybody is interested in and everybody does have a place in our program. Each person can progress according to individual capabilities," she continued.
Mrs. Rhodes added that some of

is to breathe by slowly inhaling to the count of nine and exhaling while counting to nine. It helps overcome fatigue and tension.
That the classes are popular with participants is evidenced by the repeat signers who seek to keep up the figure dimensions they obtain.
Mrs. Harold J. Haroldson of 1972 W. Dogwood, Anaheim, who has three boys said that she liked the yoga instruction so much better than the regular calisthenics. She added that she became interested in the Slim 'n Trim program through a friend of hers who has been attending for the past three years.
"I certainly will sign up again for the spring program," she declared.
Mrs. Donald M. Laine, 620 Birchleaf Dr., Anaheim, says "coming to this class gives me a chance to get out and meet people since we moved here from Wisconsin. With four children ranging from 10, 7, 3 and 18 months, is is wonderful to have a change from daily home routine. Of course, I really have to rush at home so I can get here on time but it is well worth it".
Mrs. Max L. Barlow of 628 Birchleaf Dr., Anaheim, said that just being in the class was lots of fun.

Orphan Benefit
At Peak in '63
A long-range VA survey now shows that the peak of the Veterans Administration program providing educational and training assistance to war orphans is expected to be reached this year, according to Mort Webster, Manager of VA's Southern California Regional Office.
It is estimated that nearly 24,000 children whose veteran-parent died of a service-connected disability will take advantage of this VA benefit during 1963. In 1962, more than 20,500 took part in this program, the largest number thus far to participate.
The study revealed that the program is expected to drop slowly from this peak until the year 1985 when less than 30 war orphans are expected to be enrolled.
Those who are eligible are the children, generally aged 18 to 23, of veterans whose deaths resulted from injury or disease originally incurred or aggravated in the line of duty while on active service.
Mrs. Ted Dinkler, 5262 Rio Vista, Anaheim, was honored by the YMCA's of California, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico and the Hawaiian Islands, at the Pacific Southwest Area YMCA Council meeting in Phoenix. She was the surprised recipient of the coveted Volunteer Group Leadership Award given annually to selected nominees from the five states. Volunteers who have given outstanding leadership over a period of more than ten years are nominated by local YMCAs for the honor.
The award was established by the Area YMCA Board in 1951. Qualifications include the stipulation that the honoree must be currently serving as a volunteer group leader, must have evidenced an interest in the YMCA beyond the immediate concerns of his own
pearances. These three have 10 children in varying ages. Mrs. Jane Draper, boasts of five children, Mrs. Joyce Zurick, one and Mrs. Barbara Muir, four.

"Classes are limited to 45 applicants since more benefits are obtained in "smaller classes," according to Miss Marjorie Matsushita, Recreation Supervisor.

Last Thursday afternoon the sixth grade boys of St. Boniface School took a trip to the new Anaheim Reservoir located in Olive Hills. When we got there we saw the pump. We went down to the basement and saw the extra pipes for overflow or flood. We were shown the miniature layout of Anaheim which shows the important streets and main buildings and where the water goes. We walked up the road and saw the new reservoir. The reservoir holds 750,000 gallons of water at the present time. The capacity is 60 million gallons. The area of the reservoir site is 22.3 acres. The maximum output is 30,000 gallons per minute. The maximum filling is 2,200 gallons per minute. The total cost of project is $2,261,998.92.
Now we have to write a report about the program. The city will give trophies for first and second prize. Third prize will be a free pass to the City Plunge.

CARTHAGE, TENN., COURIER: "The Internal Revenue Service announced it would require businessmen to get a receipt for every cent spent on expense accounts, what the money was spent for, the time of day it was spent, why it was spent, and if its spending was instrumental in obtaining business for which it was spent. If even one cent could not be accounted for, then the entire account would not be allowed. When the storm came, as if should have come, IRS relented and changed some of its regulations. But the core of the matter remains, and if it is put into full force it will put many places out of business, create more unemployment, close literally hundreds of resorts, and do other damage."

Mrs. Dinkler, affectionately known as "Skip" to her many girls who have been members of Tri Hi-Y clubs under her guidance, has worked with club and camp groups continuously for the past thirteen years. She has served not only in face to face leadership with high school girls, but has worked as a committee woman, has served in a leadership training capacity, and as installing officer for many YMCA ceremonies. She has at the same time been active as a member of a Hi-Y Mothers' Club, and served as a den mother when her sons were scout age. She has been a long-time participant in PTA, both in individual schools and on PTA Council. She is a member of the First Methodist Church, and for many years taught in the kindergarten department. Her membership and participation in leadership in the Anaheim YMCA dates back to 1933.
