12—The Anaheim Gazette Wednesday, February 27, 1963 ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA Fleet Opens Major Land, Sea Drills CORONADO — A large-scale Pacific Fleet exercise will be conducted at sea and ashore in the Southern California area beginning tomorrow, Vice Admiral H. A. Yeager, USN, Commander Amphibious Force, U. S. Pacific Fleet, announced today. The exercise, nicknamed "Steelgate," will involve more than 44 ships of the United States and Royal Canadian Pacific Naval Forces plus some 24,000 U. S. Marines of the Fleet Marine Force, Pacific Fleet. Ships participating include the Amphibious assault ships USS Valley Forge and USS Iwo Jima, plus 19 other ships of the Amphibious Force, Pacific Fleet, and 12 ships from the Mine Force, Submarine Force, Service Force and Military Sea Transport. Service commands of the Pacific Fleet. Canadian Mine Squadron TWO, including the minesweepers HMCS Fortune, James BaBy, Cowichan and Miramichi are the Royal Canadian naval units participating in Exercise "Steelgate.
