For nearly 500 centuries, 100,000,000 gallons of water a minute have thundered over the crest of mighty Niagara Falls. And, at California Federal Savings, $900,000,000 protects savings accounts of over 375,000 savers in 50 states and 84 countries. California Federal's assets are only one of many strengths. Reserves are far higher than law requires. Management policies have successfully met all challenges of wars, booms and depressions for 37 years. There's safety, too, in the word "Federal"—the proud middle name of this great savings association. California Federal Savings is chartered and fully supervised by a permanent agency of the U.S. Government. Federal tells you accounts are automatically insured under provisions of the Federal Savings & Loan Insurance Corporation. High earnings are coupled with this complete safety of giant size. California Federal pays quarterly dividends at a 4.8% current annual rate.*That's a higher rate than national averages of all other types of investments. California Federal savings accounts may be opened in any amount from $5 ("beginner") accounts to a total of $30,000 or more in family accounts. Savers at California Federal include individuals, husbands and wives, trusts, corporations, clubs, churches, credit unions and fraternal groups. Love is the hardest lesson in Christianity; but, for that reason, it should be most our care to learn it. — Penn They are the true disciples of Christ, not who know most, but who love most. — Frederick Spanheim Inquiring Reporter There is a great deal of attention being given to the question of urban renewal in every city of reasonable age. Anaheim, one of the oldest communities in this part of the nation, is facing the problem as well. What should be done to revitalize this more or less geographic center of the city's history, commerce and politics? To sample the thinking of Anaheim businessmen and customers the Gazette this week visited the Odyssey restaurant and interrupted leisure meals to ask: "What features would you like to see included in any renewal program for the downtown business area of our city?" Sandy MacTavis 135½ West Line Being located in the district particular consideration in the city ban renewal study. NEW INCREASED 4.8% CURRENT ANNUAL RATE Larry Campbell 718 S. Los Angeles St. Being a downtown business man I am certainly concerned with the problem we all face in maintaining an efficient, attractive area for trade of all kinds. A few pointed suggestions certainly will not solve the overall problem, but I would like to see the ultimate plan include the removal of the railroad tracks and the elimination of truck parking, particularly near intersections where the lateral view is obscured. Interior parking facilities, located in the center rear of a business block, also has appeal as an efficient location for a shopper to reach many business places with a minimum of walking and carrying of packages. Mrs. Madylin Mitchell 10212 Wasco Road I know merchants have a real problem in trying to adjust their facilities to the problems of increased populations being served. As a customer I would like to see no parking on streets in the area or have the streets widened. It is really difficult to get around in the older sections of the city. (Our picture of Mrs. Mitchell failed to develop.) Broadway, Anaheim PHONE KE 5-4105 Rifle Range Work Pushed Senior Citizens Will Have 'Day' At Orange Fair The Anaheim Park and Recreation rifle range is getting a "face lifting" these days — and should be completed by March. Dick Kamphefner, Park Superintendent, commenting on the improvements of the rifle range, let it be known that the banks are being cleaned up, new concrete steps and lawn curbing have been installed. Ground cover shrubs and trees will be planted on the banks in the spring. One firing line shack has already been torn down and future plans calls for a new "firing line" building. A centerally located one story building will house rest rooms, gun lockers, a target storage room plus a range observation room. One firing line shed will remain standing indefinitely, Kamphefner said. "We hope to acquire funds in the 1963-64 budget to complete the entire project," he added. Kamphefner also stated that on the West end of the range, there will be provisions for a combination of eight archery targets along with area for more 22 rifle targets. The general lighting which will make it possible for classes to be held at night will come from four, 1500-watt, mercury-vapor lights. Also plug-in recepticles for spot-lighting. 22 rifle targets will be installed. With the completion of the "firing line" shed, the range will be long enough to host 50 meter National meets. The new range will be able to handle, 30 riflemen, all at the same time on the firing line. "One won't recognize the old rifle range," according to Kamphefner. "With lawn covering the rifle range floor along with shrubs beautifying the banks, we expect to have one of the nicest looking ranges in the area by this time SAN BERNARDINO — Senior citizens throughout Southern California are expected to converge on the National Orange Show grounds by the bus loads to help stage the fifth annual "Senior Citizens Jamboree" held in conjunction with the citrus classic which opens an 11-day run in San Bernardino March 14 and continues through March 24. Date for the popular jamboree has been set for Mar. 19 and special programs have been slanted toward the senior visitors for the day. The celebration is sponsored by the San Bernardino County Council of Community Service, Committee on Aging, in cooperation with the National Orange Show. Mrs. C. W. Henry, committee chairman and Lovella Carling of Victorville, special projects chairman are in charge of the program. Senior Citizen clubs throughout the Southland are urged to start selling the half priced tickets of 50 cents immediately with special emphasis being placed on Los Angeles county clubs with membership running into the thousands. Awards and prizes will be given to the eldest man and woman, largest group present, the club which traveled the farthest to attend the citrus show, person with the most living children and grandchildren, anyone wit a wedding anniversary on March 19, anyone over 80 years of age and other categories. Busses will be permitted to drive on the grounds to unload Mrs. Diane Hall 1043 West Porter One of the traffic designs which I believe would be beneficial on streets as busy with traffic as downtown Anaheim is the left turn lane. These would permit traffic to move more rapidly. I believe, on streets such as Los Angeles. County Okays Wider Bridges The Board of Supervisors has approved the request of the Flood Control District to negotiate a Joint Powers Agreement with the City of Cypress to widen the bridges at Moody and Walker Streets, and also to construct an entirely new bridge for the extension of Denni Street. The cooperation of the City of Cypress is proposed in the matter of providing this additional construction along the following lines: 1.) The Flood Control District will complete the drawings and specifications which have partially been prepared by the City. 2.) The Flood Control District will advertise and receive bids, award a contract, and supervise the construction. 3.) The Flood control District will contribute the amount of $10,000, being the estimated value of the concrete channel lining to be provided under the bridges. 4.) The City will pay the additional construction costs. 'Family Gathering' At Knotts for 250 It was just a "little family gathering" recently at Knott's Berry Farm, when the Knott Family had over 250 in for a private family dinner. Half of those attending were employees or concessionaire celebrating five year increments of service with the Knott Family. Joining with Mr. and Mrs. Knott in honoring a total of 1,165 years of continuous service, were all members of the Knott "family." The service award is in the form of a miniature covered wagon with the stone setting indicating the number of years of service with Kontt's Berry Farm. Children to Sing For Venture Club Under the direction of Dorothy Flanagan of Anaheim, Sing-O-Rama's performing group, the Melolarks, ranging in age from 4 to 14 years will entertain members and friends of the Venture Club at a dinner party honoring that organizations' 1st birthday on Saturday, Feb. 9 at Michaels' Restaurant in Fullerton. Parents of children gifted with good singing voices and musical ability explore the Sing-O-Rama as a medium of educational development that provides opportunities for self expression through numerous social and musical experiences. Emphasis is now being placed on the field of recording and children will be selected from ship running into the thousands. Awards and prizes will be given to the eldest man and woman, largest group present, the club which traveled the farthest to attend the citrus show, person with the most living children and grandchildren, anyone wit a wedding anniversary on March 18, anyone over 80 years of age and other categories. Busses will be permitted to drive on the grounds to unload club members. There will be free milk and there will be box lunches available at a small charge. Entertainment will include magicians, clowns and professional entertainers and one of the high lights of the day will be the spectacular orange cake and lemon pie baking contest. Trams will be operated on the grounds for tours of the various exhibits and features and the Arinda Construction Company has invited the visitors to avail themselves of the comforts of the model home. Mortgage Firm In Local Office Investor's Mortgage Service Co. has opened its sixth California branch office in the Lincoln Professional Building, 2030 Lincoln Blvd., Anaheim, it was announced today by Don Gorley, assistant vice president. Gordon Livingston, previously Investor's Mortgage representative in charge of the South Los Angeles and Orange County areas, has been appointed manager, Gorley said. The expansion was necessitated by a 60 per cent gain in FHA and VA mortgage loans by Investor's Mortgage in Orange County during the past year, Gorley stated. He predicted an average monthly volume of half a million dollars for the Anaheim office during 1963. will complete the drawings and specifications which have partially been prepared by the City. 2.) The Flood control District will contribute the amount of $10,000, being the estimated value of the concrete channel lining to be provided under the bridges. 4.) The City will pay the additional construction costs. During 1968 the Flood Control District constructed Part I of the Carbon Creek Channel from Coyote Creek to the Pacific Electric Railroad track, a distance of 3.2 miles. Bridges 30 feet wide, but readily expandable, were provided at Moody and Walker Streets. The construction of this facility has greatly stimulated land development in the area to the point that now the City of Cypress feels it is urgent to widen these bridges and construct a new one for the extension of Deani Street, according to Superviser William J. Phillips. Third District. Parents of children gifted with good singing voices and musical ability explore the Sing-O-Rama as a medium of educational development that provides opportunities for self expression through numerous social and musical experiences. Emphasis is now being placed on the field of recording and children will be selected from two groups to train for that purpose — the Pixies, 4 to 7 years of age and the Melolarks, 7 to 14 years of age. Children will be selected from Sing-O-Rama members on a basis of singing ability, cooperation, and good attendance. Further information may be obtained by phoning KE 5-1441.
