Chamber Brings Pressure Against State Teachers Although Governor Pat Brown budgeted $2.8 million for the printing and publishing of school textbooks during the current fiscal year, pressure is being brought to bear to dispense with the burden on the taxpayers, Anaheim residents included. According to the newspaper, published by the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce, directors of that chamber recently approved a recommendation by the Industrial Development committee to encourage a private enterprise textbook printing and publishing industry in California. Textbooks are now printed by the State-owned Printing Office through the use of leased plates. Districts have been allowed to purchase other books, provided their cost is no more than 10 per cent above the cost of "comparable" texts from the State Printers on the basis of leased plates. Califronia is the only state in the US to maintain a textbook printing plant. It was the opinion of the Industrial interest of the State to have textbook printing done by private interests on a free competitive basis. It is also the consensus of the L.A. Chamber committee that establishment of such a printing and publishing industry here would increase the total number of jobs and economic activity in Califronia. "The main fault with the leasedplate method of printing basic texts as now used in the State is the inferiority of the books made available by the state Printing Office," the committee reported. "Educators are nearly unanimous in denouncing the text serries now provided by the State for elementary schools. "With the California textbook market available to publishers, there will be a substantial need to establish western plants by the big eastern printing houses in order to compete for the large coast market. "In addition, new California firms would develop and those ex-isting could expand." the committee stated in its report to the board of directors. 4 DAY CONTINUED BY AR DEMAND PUBLISHER IN PHILIPPINES — Virgil Pinkley (center) noted newscaster and publisher of Pinkley Publications, which include the Orange Daily News as well as the Stanton Sun and Anaheim Gazette here in Orange County, is shown being greeted upon his arrival in the Philippines by P. Of the 243 who received a bachelor of arts degree from Orange State in February, June, or August of 1962, the largest number, 109, have gone into elementary teaching. Twenty-eight are currently enrolled in the College's secondary teaching credential program, while 23 others are continuing their education as unclassified graduates. In graduate programs are 11 students, with 7 of these of Long Beach State; 1—University of Southern California; 1—University of California at Los Angeles; 1—University of California at Santa Barbara; and 1—University of Oregon. Eight women are now "employed" full-time as housewives, Burke said. Six chose government and welfare work and five "chose" the military service. One student is studying for the ministry, while four others are still seeking employment (non-teaching). No information has been received on 14 of the graduates, Burke revealed.
