Mothers March for Dimes to Fight Birth Defects and Crippling Arthritis A mother concerned for hundred of thousands of crippled American children, and who has experienced the heartbreak of losing a baby born with birth defects this past year, appealed today for help to other mothers of Orange County. She is Mrs. Donald R. Eells, 1453 Chevy Chase, Anaheim, whose appointment as chairman of the 25th Anniversary Mothers’ March for the March of Dimes was announced by Art McKenzie of Costa Mesa, campaign director. Mrs. Eells said her first task is to recruit as many volunteers as possible to march on January 29. She asked those wishing to serve to call KI 7-6124 or sign up with their community Mothers’ March chairman. “Our 1963 March of Dimes theme is ‘Give for the Life of a Child and I am confident Orange County residents will respond when our Marching Mothers call,’” Mrs. Eells said. “A child crippled by a birth defect or arthritis — just as we discovered in the polio fight — can be helped if he gets the proper medical care, and that is the prime goal of the 1963 Mothers’ March. “Our aim is to make the best possible treatment available to everyone, everywhere. We hope one day that parents of crippled children will not have to say ‘If I’d only known where to turn.’” she declared. Mr. and Mrs. Eells are the parents of two children Diane Anita age 10 and Dale Lorraine, age 8. Freeway Residents Warned Of Bad Checks Anaheim residents should be on guard, the state Department of Employment said today against what appears to be a statewide counterfeiting ring that has printed and cashed bogus disability insurance checks. The state disability fund which is financed by a one per cent tax on wages paid by workers will suffer no loss as a result of the counterfeiting because the state will not honor a counterfeit check. The risk, it was explained, is that of the person, firm or bank who accepts a counterfeit state check, as is the normal business procedure in cases of fictitious checks or currency. The department said appearance of the counterfeit state checks does not justify interruption of the disability insurance benefit payment program because of its vital importance to the sick and injured. Officials suggested the public's best protection in accepting state checks is to follow the same precautions it does in handling other checks, the most effective of which is to know the realiability of the person who presents the check. Each state disability check bears on its face in bold type this admonition: "Require Identification — Know Your Endorser." This warning appears just as clearly on the face of each counterfeit copy. So far, the department reported, 79 counterfeit disability benefit checks totaling $10,520 and ranging in amounts from $70 to $140 are known to have been cashed recently in eleven California cities, including Los Angeles, Sacramento, West Sacramento, Oakland, San Mateo, Burlingame, San Jose, Richmond, Hillsdale, Culver City, and Anaheim.
