ANAHEIM GAZETTE Wednesday, December 12, 1963 ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA Anaheim Colony $200,000 ‘Futurity’ Set for Los Alamitos J. B. Chambers' Jet Deck today looked like the toughest kid on the block, but his handler, Wilbur Stuchal, admits to being scared of a little gal in the $200,000 plus Los Alamitos Futurity to be run Saturday at Los Alamitos Race Course. That little gal is O. C. O'Quinn's Miss Bar Leo, who set or equalled four world records just before arriving here. The tiny and cute little filly made her debut last Saturday in the Los Alamitos Futurity Trials and she was really something to see. She stands but 14 hands and her fighting weights is about 925 pounds — but she’s stacked. When she runs, her trainer Marshall Farell says, "It’s almost like watching a ball roll along." "She runs low to the ground, and in a hurry, with her little legs working. But she still runs smoothly — just like a ball rolling." Jet Deck, however, showed that he is still the horse to beat after he captured the $25,000 Pacific Coast Quarter Horse Racing Association Cal-Bred Futurity Saturday before the largest crowd of the meeting, 12,525. Dodgers Record Hard To Beat The 1963 Los Angeles Dodgers will have a tremendous set of individual and team performance to match if they are again to be exciting as were the Dodgers in 1962. Allan Roth, Keeper of Statistics, reveals in his annual view. Highlighting the year we these fine achievements: Don Drysdale, top pitcher of the year (25 victories) and Cy Young Award Winner. Maury Wills, all-time bas stealing recordholder (14 steal and Most Valuable Player in the National League). Sandy Koufax, No. 1 ERA pitcher in National League (2.54) and no-hit, no-run performer. Tommy Davis, major league leader in hits (230), runs batted (153) and batted (.346). Dodger batters, pitchers and fielders led the National Leau team departments, only a few them on the negative side. Indian 'Y' Guides Turkey Shoot 'Heap Big Success' Thanks to the co-operation of the Department of Parks and Recreation of Anaheim, the YMCA Indian Guide Turkey Shoot came off as the most unruffled event of the Fall season. As in previous years, the YMCA sponsored and exciting Turkey Shoot for little braves in the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grades. Under the supervision of their dads, who are members with them in this fastest growing youth program in Southern California, the miniature Indians faced a noble target and blasted away with "Y" B B guns at 15 feet. 193 boys were registered with Bob Reason, co-chairman of the event and scores ranging from disappointed "zeros" to exhilarating "eighties" best told the emotional story of the 1962 Turkey Shoot. As prizes to the winners in each of the grade level divisions, 15 lb tom turkeys were given to the little braves whose keen eye and steady hand paved the way to near perfect aim. Each brave was allowed 10 BBs for which the best five were scored. The last five were then used to break ties. The winners later received a telephone call inviting them to claim their turkeys. Turkey winners were: Jack Cope and Jim Peoples, 3rd grade; Tim McManus and Timmy Crane, 2nd grade; Andy Santilli and Richard Rowe. Anaheim's amazing colony have no regrets. Title Playoff Bounce Redlands Terriers 21-9 to Meet Loyola in Finals Friday Anaheim's amazing colonists are no regrets. They soundly trounced the Redlands Terriers Friday night by the score of 21-9 to gain revenge for year's 20-20 tie which knocked out of the title tilt. They gained the right to meet Cubs of Loyola this Friday in Los Angeles Coliseum to defeat the champions of the Californias AA playoffs. Sweet Revenge Played before an estimated 15-hardy football fans in the fog and stadium of Mt. San Antonio was "sweet revenge" for Coach Rene Van Hoorebeke's top-rankeleven. It was last year's tie that cliped the Colonists and for awhile Friday's game it appeared as if history might repeat itself. Anaheim scored first late in the first quarter as Marty Hutchinson, hard-hitting fullback, twisted his way 26 yards for the tally. Lou Torres converted and the quarter ended with Anaheim leading 7-0. Terriers Roar Back The Terriers roared back in the second stanza to roll 72 yards in 14 plays and come within one single point as the half ended on a 7-6 note. An attempt by Anaheim to enlarge the lead was foiled when a touchdown pass from the "mighty mite" Doug Daniels to end Ty Salness was nullified by a holding penalty. Redlands leaped ahead as Kurt Zimmerman, who had missed the point after touchdown, booted a 30 yard field goal to make the score 9-7 in favor of the Terriers. Lead Short-Lived Much to the pleasure of Anaheim's frantic rooters however, the lead was short-lived as the Colonists came storming back on the kickoff. Marching from Redlands 48-yard line in seven plays Van Hoorebeke's fired-up squad hit pay dirt on a one-yard plunge by Hutchinson. With three minutes remaining in the third quarter, Torres converted to make it 14-9, Anaheim. The final tally came after five minutes of the fourth quarter when quarterback Doug Daniels took to the air and dropped two consecutive passes into the arms of Salness for the TD. Final Tally The Sunset League Player of the Year gathered in tosses of 17 yards and 18 yards to race into the end zone for the clincher. Torres converted for the third PAT and the final score of 21-9 had been reached. Torres converted for the third PAT and the final score of 21-9 had been reached. Loyola, who slipped by a determined Glendale High School team by the score of 7-0, has a far more potent team than the score indicates. Coach Van Hoorebeke lauded his team for their fine efforts against their bitter rivals from Redlands but reminded them that the "tough one is yet to come."
