Football Banquet Set For Bowl - Bound 'Dons Saluting the Junior Rose Bowl Santa Ana Dons, the Second Guessers Booster Club and the college jointly will hold a championship football banquet at the college on Monday, Dec. 17, with ex-Don star Vic Lindskog as the speaker. Coach Homer Beatty and his Dons won the Eastern Conference season and the JRB selection against Columbia Basin of Pasco. Wash., after a perfect season. A turnaway crowd is anticipated for the traditional banquet, to be held in the Student Union at 6:30 p.m. Reservations are being accepted by mail at the college. In keeping with a Don tradition of bringing back outstanding alumni as campus banquet speakers, Lindskog was chosen for the football dinner. He is an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Rams, previously was an assistant at Bakersfield College and then Vancouver professional team in the Canadian League, and enjoyed a long professional career with the Philadelphia Eagles. He was all-pro center repeatedly. Lindskog didn't play high school football in his tiny home town of Cubank, Mont., but he soo learned to be a bruising blocker halfback for Coach Bill Cook on Don teams in 1938 and 1939. He centered strong Stanford team and played with the Indians against Nebraska in the 1941 Rose Bowl. Former coach Cook, now Director of physical education for the Santa Ana City Schools after 22 years as SAC headman, will be among the special banquet guests. Coming with Lindskog are expected to be two former SAC All-Americans, now playing with the Rams, Halfback Pervis Atkins and End Duane Allen. THE WILLIAMS CO. ARMY-NAVY SURPLUS 112 E. The first block of 9000 sold out in Santa Ana the first day, and thousands more were hustled in to keep up with the demand. Led by All-American quarterback candidate Dunn Marteen, Santa Ana College not only dominated the Eastern Conference final statistics but won the coveted bid to represent the West in the Junior Rose Bowl at Pasadena on Saturday, Dec. 15. While the Don press clippings are impressive, Coach Homer Beatty is warning his charges that Columbia Basin, from Pasco, Wash., also has run roughshod over all opposition this year, including a solid win over always-dangerous Bakersfield, where Betty was headman before moving to Santa Ana four years ago. With the Thanksgiving Day holidays behind them, the Dons resumed practice Monday, in top physical shape for the national championship game. While the Dons concentrated on their 10th game coming up, railbirds rated the 1962 Dons as just about the greatest in a long line of powerful SAC teams, dating way back 46 years. And to Marteen went much of the credit, since he led the conference in total offense, passing and scoring. The poised ex-Marine completed 55 passes in 90 attempts, a 61 per cent record netting 1027 yards. His aerials brought 16 touchdowns. He scored 81 points to lead the league, making him responsible for 177 of SAC's record-breaking 362 total. He was responsible for more points than seven EC teams scored altogether. Marteen Stars Adding the 362 yards he gained rushing, Marteen boasts a total offense mark of 3389, not far below the 1430 yards gained by unanimous All-American Keith Luh- Jack Bolle picked off three defensive ace Frank André closed his conference two-year reeer in the final 14 seconds of Fullerton game by intercepting Hornet pass and racing 15 yrs for the final touchdown in the to 12 victory. Safety man Paul Davinci turned 23 punts for 231 yards one touchdown — 77 yards again Grossmont. Stan Woods led kickoff average with seven bows for 49.0 average, although Derrick Orr was consistently long on me of the Don kickoffs. Ledby had a 38 yard punt average; Tucker led in kickoff returns six for 119 yards, and Davinci turned five for 80 yards. Remarkable Records Talking of statistics, Coach Beatty and Dwight Poolsin collectively have remarked wonderful coaching records.
