Anaheim’s Billy Cantrell Featured in ‘Grand Prix’ A major auto racing event, born in the depths of the depression, will be renewed for the 22nd running tomorrow night, at Asiot Park in Gardena when J. C. Agajanian stages the annual Thanksgiving 150-lap midget car Grand Prix. As in the past, dating back to its inception in 1934 at Gilmore Stadium, the classic will feature the greatest names in the sport — defending champion and 1961 Indy winner A. J. Foyt, Parnelli Jones, Jim Hurtubise, national 110 Offy (midget) champion Jim Davies, Billy Cantrell of Anaheim and 40 more. Foyt is one of two former Grand Prix winners in the field. The other is 54-year-old Joe Garson of Eagle Rock, who made his first start in the traditional holiday race in the late 30's. It was not until 1958, however, that Garwas victorious. In addition to Garson, two other names in the lineup span from the days when the race filled Gilmore stadium to the brim in the 1940's. They’re Billy Cantrell and Allen Heath. The list of past champions includes two former Indy winners in addition to Foyt. Johnnie Parsons and the late Billy Vukovich as well as such household speed names of the era as Tony Bettenhausen, Perry Grimm, George Amick, Roy Russing, Bob Swanson, Mel Hanson and Ronnie Householder. When Gilmore Stadium was razed to make way for the present television center, Agajanian received permission from Earl Gilmore to hold the Grand Prix at Gardena Stadium. It was shifted to the half-mile Ascot oval in 1960, and Foyt has won both races there. the WILLIAMS Co. 112 E. COMMONWEALTH Downtown Fullerton 130 E. LINCOLN AVE. Friars Score Again Following a 31-yard pass to Bill Halligan, the Friars tallied score number two. While at Bakersfield C from 1953 to 1959, his Renegad had a record of 53-7-3, included 1953 victory in the Junior Bowl over N. E. Oklahoma At Santa Ana College the Nahaheim Drops Western Sunset League Finale Heim's cross-town rivals, Nahaheim Colonists and the Tern Pioneers, went through usual rugged gridiron battle day night at La Palma Stadium. The game served only to that Aanheim is still unbeaten. The Sunset League champion proved to be their six at league win in as many games as they eighth in any for the overall seasons. First quarter went scoreless teams played good defenses. 9:08 remaining in the second quarter, Western took over initiative when halfback Louie Grabbed the ball and then yards to tally the games score. The TD was brought position in 11 plays during 86 yards were chalked up. Blint kicked a successful after to edge the score to minutes later, the Colonists back to even the tally. Anaheim took the ball on its own 32 plays later Marty Hutchrambled from the four into zone. Louie Torres evened up with a successful conversion into the third quarter, but broke the deadlock earl. 48-yard jine. Pete Ganahl chalked up another six yards after which De Hart carried the ball, this time moving 33 yards to the opposition's nine. On the next play the lanky halfback took two yards and proceeded to move the final seven to score on the next play. The extra point was missed. Friars Score Again Following a 31-yard pass to Bill Halligan, the Friars tallied score number two. Ganahl took six yards moved the Friars to the Salesian five yard line. De Hart moved from the five and brought the ball into the end zone for the tally. When the Padres took the ball again, Bill Carey countered on a 26-yard aerial to fullback Chuck Rees. Two plays later De Hart added another score, his third in a row, moving from the 17-yard marker, and again, also for the third consecutive time, John Mullen's extra point was wide. Three plays later tackle Blaine Nye, back in play after sustained a foot injury in the clash against Mater Dei, recovered a Mustang fumble on the 25 and romped to a touchdown, proving that lightning does strike twice if the same place — as a matter of fact, three times—for this is the third during the season in which this same play has occurred. Rick Aschenbrenner's extra point try fell short. At the half-time the board showed a lop-sided Friar score, 24-0. Second Half Moving into the second half, after nine plays, Pete Ganahl tallied number five, from the five. Aschenbrenner again kicked making one of the few successful points after this season. Starting the period, linebacker Rick Crog, took a flat pass out of Salesians hands their own 21 yard line going unhampered into the end zone to tally the next score. The point after was marred by a bad center pass. This was the end of the scoring romp for the Friars and gave them the game by a score of 37-0. This Mustang massacre was reminiscent of last years Servite-Salesian game, which the Friars broke open by chalking up a thirty four to nothing score. And also reminiscent of last years season, was the Mustang record, a very poor 0-4 in League play. Servite's Friars finished League season in a tie for second place with Cantwell with a 2-1-1 record. The overall record for the Friars stands at 5-3-1. Buena Park Halted By Bolsa Grande Has any sadder sight been seen. Where is the old winning team Buena Park used to sport. Admitting that the play was a homecoming game for the other team still leaves little room for excuses. Saturday's game against Bolsa Grande brought Buena order of 81 wins, only 14 defeats four ties. Dons to Meet Hawks In Junior Rose Bowl By DAVE DISTEL Santa Ana College will oppose Columbia Basin in the 17th annual junior Rose Bowl on Dec. 15 as result of winning the Eastern conference title and closing a perfect season with a 36 to 12 decision over a hard-fighting band Fullerton Hornets. Coach Homer Beatty's Dons, conquersors of nine Eastern Conference opponents, will be the first EC team tabbed for the classic Pasadena game since Bill Cook's powerhouse team of 1949. The Dons bowed to Little Rock, Ark., 25 to 19 on that frigid day. The Hawks from Pasco, Wash., unbeaten but once tied, will be the first Pacific Coast team to get the "eastern" nod. Because there are 70 junior colleges in California, the western bid always goes to a Golden State team. This will only be the Hawks' second trip to California. Columbia Basin overpowered potent Bakersfield 20-7 in its season opener this year. The Hawk's tie was a 13-13 knot with 13th ranked Wenatchee. The Washington team was ranked first or second all season, while the Dons forged steadily ahead all season to challenge Long Beach and Columbia Basin for leadership. But it was that win over Bakersfield, last year's Junior Rose Bowl western team, that convinced the experts the team must be considered. Oddly enough, it was Bakersfield that tied unbeaten Long Beach 0-0 to clinch the bowl bid for the Dons. Fullerton, only once-beaten before the Don onslaught, held SAC scoreless for one quarter before the roof collapsed. All-American quarterback candidate Dunn Marteen engineered the Dons to a quick 21 to 0 lead in the second quarter. He passed for two touchdowns, ran for another, kicked for conversions, ran for another and 214 yards total offense. He now has a season mark of 54 completions on 89 passes, including 16 for touchdowns; 1019 years total offense, 81 points for the conference lead. straight victory over Fullerton, in addition to five straight over Orange Coast, to give the Dons domination for the Orange County championship.
