Defending champion Santa Ana and the challenger in the white will both be gunning for a possible ticket to Pasadena and the Dec. 15 Junior Rose Bowl. Coach Homer Beatty’s Dons, one of the highest scoring teams in conference history, drubbed a potent Chaffey squad 43-0 last week to gain momentum for the crucial Pirate battle. The Pirates edged Mt. San Antonio 14-7 in the fog at Costa Mesa. Coast Is ‘Underdog’ Orange Coast has three things to add incentive to its effort: The Bucs are the definite underdog, they haven’t beaten the Dons since 1957 and the desire to avenge last year’s 64-7 humbling. Coach Dick Tucker, former Brea-Olinda mastermind, formed a ragged second division outfit into one of the top ranked teams in the nation this year in his initial campaign at OCC. With scatbacks Bill White and Mike Hunter carrying the offensive load, the Bucs have stunned junior college experts with their 7-0 record. Fullback Bob Haynes and linemen Fred Belt and Ben Rapp are other Buc standouts. Well-Balanced Squad Beatty has a balanced squad with an accent on depth. The Dons have survived one of the greatest onslaughts of injuries in SAC grid history with an unscathed mark. All-American quarterback candidate Dunn Marteen has engineered the record-breaking Don offense machine. The Dons have marched for almost 3,200 total offense in seven games while scoring 292 points against 19. Sets New Record Marteen’s triple-threat talents have baffled defenses all year. Against rugged Riverside, Marteen gained an EC-record 290 yards in total offense. He passed for two touchdowns and ran for another. Last week in the lopsided Chaffey win, Marteen fired three scoring strikes and ran for another.
