Make My Shot
A Sugar Cube
By DORIS LEE
We all went to the polio clinic Sunday for our sugar cube vaccine and I must say it didn't hurt a bit. I'll take my shots on a sugar cube anytime. It certainly beats punching holes in the skin and pumping it in that way.
When it comes to needles I show my true amber colors. I cry and plead and sometimes disgrace myself in front of my children. I don't even make a faint stab (dear, dear,) at bravery. I just faint.
The size of the needle means nothing to me, whether it's the small, quick-jab type that disgorges itself into the meatiest part of me, or the jack-hammer size that burrows into a vein and dangles there for an eternity sucking out bood like a vampire, I hate them all.
And lately needles just have it in for me, first for my slipped disc, and then for an infection that developed.
The slipped disc, as I described exultantly in an earlier column, is a chronic condition that never bothers me unless I strain my back. Then two things happen. My spine begins clicking when I walk and I develop a pain in my side, of all places. If I let it go, the pain worsens and my walk deteriorates into a bent-over shuffle.
The doctor has warned me not to let it go that far, but to go in right away for a shot in the back (administered in slow motion with a two-foot drill). It's always a terrible thing.
Couldn't I have it on a sugar cube?" I pleaded.
"No," he said, selecting a sterile needle encased in a pale lavender tube.
"In a spoonfull of jelly?" I begged. "My mother used to crush my aspirins in a spoonful of jelly."
"Turn around," he said, needle poised.
It was quick and not too painful, but it hit my walking muscle; my leg went to sleep and folded under me. I made my way to the outer office, my foot dragging.
"Well now!" said the receptionist cheerfully, flipping the pages of her appointment book. "You have to come in every day for a shot, so —"
"Forget it," I interrupted as I hobbled toward the door. "Call me when I can get it on a sugar cube."

bothers me unless I strain my back.
It's always a terrible decision to make. A shot in the back is like a shot in the middle of the forehead; the amount of cushioning is comparable. Even the doctor has to admit that it's advisable to numb the area beforehand.
I've had it twice. I may never have it again. The first time was fine. The novocaine made the drill feel more like a needle. I complimented him on his delicate touch. The flattery must have gone to his head because the next time he omitted the novocaine. Or if he used it, as he later claimed when he was able to get a coherent sentence out of me, it must have been up around my shoulder blades because I felt the needle go through my back muscles, kidneys, liver, intestines and stop short of my belt buckle.
Encore
I was still recovering from this trauma when the infection felled me.
"Penicillin" he pronounced getting a firm grip on my wrist to keep me from running.
"Not a needle!" I cried.
He nodded, barely concealing his glee.
