State Recommends Oct. 21 Polio Immunization Start A telegram from the California Department of Public Health strongly urging oggintuation of plans for a mass oral polio vaccination program has been received by Dr. Edward L. Russell, chief of the Orange County Health Department. Dr. William K. Friend, president of the Orange County Medical Association, says the California Medical Association's advisory committee on oral polio vaccine concurs in the recommendations from the State Health Department. In Orange County, plans are continuing for a program scheduled to begin on Sunday, October 21. Type 1 Sabin oral vaccine will clinics on Sundays, October 21 and 28. Type 2 vaccine will be given out on Sundays, December 2 and 9. Type 3 is scheduled for clinics on February 3 and 10. All three types of the vaccine wil be administered in doses of two drops on a cube of sugar. Dr. Russell and Dr. William K. Friend, president of the Orange County Medical Association, are urging that all persons over the age of six weeks take the oral vaccine. This includes persons who have had Salk injections. An individual who has had Salk shots may be immune to polio but he can still transmit the disease if "wild" polio viruses inhabit his intestinal tract. With the Sabin vaccine, not only is the individual immune, himself but he also is no longer a carrier. The oral vaccine halts the growth of polio viruses in the intestinal tract. Therefore, spread of the disease is brought to a standstill. With a large percentage of a population immunized with the Sabin oral vaccine, chances of an epidemic occurring are very slight. With the ever increasing population in Orange County, the tuberculosis and health problems are also increasing at a similar rate. For this reason, a large scale Christmas Seal campaign, with community volunteers playing an important role, is necessary so that the community services provided by Tuberculosis and Health Association of Orange County can continue to keep pace with the expanding population. In a letter to Chairman Warren G. Magnuson of the Senate Commerce Committee, the Senior California Senator said vigorous action is necessary to increase international trade in the Pacific area. His comments were prompted by recent Commerce Committee hearings on trade patterns. "In these days when the European Common Market looms large in any discussion of our foreign trade, too often over-looked is the fact that nearly 25 per cent of our foreign sales are made to countries in the Pacific Area. The tremendous growth of our trade with Japan vividly demonstrates the ultimate potential which exists for American exports in this region. While the growth of our trade in the area may depend in large part on the economic development of its 16 countries, I am confident that there are many steps which can be taken now to stimulate our sales to the region and to insure that American producers and manufacturers share fully in the growing markets there, "I hope, for instance, that your hearings and your consideration of this matter will result in greater efforts on the part of our government to put an end to the exchange controls, import quotas and similar restrictions which now hamper our trade with hee Pacific countries." Reflecting the expanded hire during the month and withdrawal from the labor force of your workers, unemployment dropped from 161,200 in August to 150 in September. The rate of lessness declined from 5.3 to per cent, and was the lowest rate in two and a half years. The current rate compared with per cent last September with 176,900 were without jobs. "Bob" Geier, Republican candidate for Congress from the newly-formed 34th district, said that if elected he will introduce a bill in Congress to obtain a Constitutional amendment. Prayer Bill Says Geier Robert A. "Bob" Geier, Republican candidate for Congress from the newly-formed 34th district, said that if elected he will introduce a bill in Congress to obtain a Constitutional amendment legalizing school prayer in America. He pointed out that the whole question of prayers and Bible reading in schools was being distorted, and that the U.S. Supreme Court's recent announcement that it will review the matter because of recent conflicting decisions by lower courts "will serve only to becloud the issue further." Geier emphaized he considered the U.S. Constitution "a divinely inspired document" and that he "did not believe they intended to rule prayer out of the schoolroom". He said the Supreme Court's ruling against "recitation of prayer" was a social rather than legal edict. He further added that Congress should present the people with a Constitutional Amendment that would clarify the issue and legalize the recitation of prayers in schools. In this age of materialism we should not further promote spiritual starvation among the young who are searching for guidance", Geier declared.
