As every freeway veteran knows, citizens with cars in California seem to multiply faster than mosquitoes in a marsh.
It comes as small surprise, therefore, that the Golden State's motor fuel market — the nation's largest — rose by 258 million gallons and gasoline sales accounted for more than $1.35 billion last year, according to Wells Fargo Bank's current BUSINESS REVIEW.

special oil well came a gusher early nine decades ago — today furnishes direct employment to 5,000 people and uses assets valued at more than $6 billion.
The market for petroleum products in California continues to grow, but its output of crude oil sliding. In 1961, production was at a daily rate of 819,000 barrels for a total of 298.9 million barrels, the lowest level since 1943.
It is getting harder to find new crude oil reserves in the state, only two major fields (those with an ultimate estimated recovery of 100 million barrels and up) have been found in California during the postwar period.
This doesn't stop drillers from trying. Well completions rose 18 per cent last year to the highest level since 1957, a year when the Suez crisis stimulated demand artificially. A total of 2,023 wells (including dry holes) was drilled in 1961, compared with 1,700 the previous year. The increase results from lively development in (1) drilling operations in California's major low gravity fields; and (2) success of natural gas exploration in the Saramento ley, an industry high throughout the nation as well the state last year.
Exciting new engineering niques, which permit comp of wells on the ocean floor eliminate producing plate above the surface, were pert during 1961. They open ex tion of areas in deep water; 200 feet where drilling pre y was not practical.
