Servite Friars Break Bosco Tech Eleven 29-6
Servite Friars ran over Bosco Tech of South San Gabriel 29-6 last Thurs. night. It was clearly Servite all the way despite four lost fumbles and 122 yards in penalties assessed against the team.
In the first quarter Rick Ashenbrenner recovered a Tech fumble on the opposition's 30 yard line. Four plays later Chuck Rees charged 15 yards for the score, but one of the many penalties called it back. Two plays later Rees went over from the nine but fumbled in the end zone, Ralph Clark of the Padres recovering for six points. Ashenbrenner's boot made it 7-0. The Friars were anything but quiet for the rest of the half but yet failed to score again.
Early in the third quarter Tom Dehart rambled home from the 15 to increase Servite's magin to two touchdowns. At the end of the period the Friars began a 70 yard march to pay dirt. Fred Wingo's recovery of a fumble behind the goal again resulted in the score. The point after missed, so the tally stood at 20-0.
For further cushion Blaine Nye threw signal-caller Gary Fidone for a safety. One play later Mike Techmen scored on a 58 yard pass and run play immediately after the kickoff.
Friars ended up ahead in first downs, 15-3, and in yardage from the line of scrimmage, 303-116. It also must be noted that half of Bosco Tech's yardage came on their last play of the game. Quarterback Bill Carey and halfback Tom Dehart stood out among many stars in the backfield, while tackle Blaine Nye starred on the line.

Orange Coast Pirates Open Cross Country Season Fri.
Eighteen Pirate cross-country runners opened the Orange Coast College hill-and-dale season when they traveled to Azusa last Friday, to face host Citrus and visiting Pierce College.
Buc opener was originally scheduled for Sept. 28 on the Costa Mesa campus. However, Southwestern, the scheduled visiting team, decided not to field a squad this year. Following the Southwestern cancellation, the hospitality of Owl coach Ed Conley was gratefully accepted by Buc mentor Norm Lumian.
Pirates finished third in the Eastern Conference meet last year trailing champion Santa Ana and Mt. San Antonio. Citrus was the sixth place EC team in '61. Pierce has always been a factor to be reckoned with in the Western States Conference. Second last year, they then placed eighth in the Southern California meet; Orange Coast was seventh in this same race.
Pirates are led by three sophomore-lettermen. Captain of the team, Joe Garrett of Westminster, is the only hold over from the Big Red Eastern Conference cross-country championship team of 1960. Assisting Garrett in leading the '62 squad are Mike Schooling of Bolsa Grande (number 5 man on the '61 team) and last year's sixth man, Dale Whitely of Huntington Beach.
