Last year, the average American shopper spent a dollar this way 34 cents for meats and poultry; 23 cents for vegetables and fruits; 19 cents for dairy foods; 16 cents for breads and cereals; and 8 cents for miscellaneous products. Consumers usually spend about one-fifth of the food dollar on dairy foods, one of the basic four food groups recognized as the foundation for a good diet. ANAHEIM CALIFORNIA Wednesday, September 16, 1962 Anaheim YMCA Will Sponsor New Group In Rossmoor Formation of a Los Alamitos Rossmoor YMCA Committee, related to the Anaheim YMCA, was announced by Richard W. Gay, Y board president, following a series of studies and planning meetings. New committee will seek to assist in the coordination and in the development of YMCA services in the growing Los Alamitos-Rossmoor district which is located in the western section of the Anaheim YMCA service area. Dr. Richard S. Leno, Los Alamitos School District superintendent, was elected chairman of the new committee. Henery Van Ruiten, Los Alamitos dairyman, was elected vice chairman and Mrs. Marjorie Norris of Rossmoor, secretary. Other committeemen named to date are Dr. Carlos Munoz, Donald Nielsen, Ruben Perez, Police Chief Dan French, Joyn Ridd, William Eaton, James Attarian, Robert Hamilton, and Dr. Thomas Luparello. William Eaton of 1181 Martha Ann Drive, Rossmoor, was named a member of the board of directors of the Anaheim YMCA. Dr. Leno will serve as a Y Board member during his term of office as chairman of the new Los Alamitos-Rossmoor Committee. The colorful history of the Anaheim wine industry, once famous the world over, was toasted during the week-long event. Former Anaheim Teacher, Coach Heads Chapman Evening College Dr. Paul H. Demaree director emeritus of the Chapman Evening College, has returned to the Chapman campus this fall to again direct the college's evening program following the resignation last month of Dr. Leo M. Thomas. Dr. Thomas who left to accept a new administrative post in the Garden Grove High School district succeeded Dr. Demaree in 1961 as director of Chapman's Evening College and summer sessions. "We are indeed grateful to Dr. Demaree for agreeing on such short notice to come to the aid of the college and to take more time from his well-deserved retirement," commented Dr. John L. Davis, Chapman College president. Although he retired in 1961 after serving four years at Chapman, Dr. Demaree has continued to hold the rank of an assistant professor of education, and was scheduled to teach two evening courses this fall at the college. For many years a resident of Anaheim, where he was superintendent of the Union High School district for 16 years, Dr. Demaree Richardson Is Guest Dr. Raph Richardson, candidate for state superintendent of and his wife are now living in Dana Point. A graduate of Kentucky Wesleyan and the University of Southern California, Dr. Demaree as a teacher and coach in the Anaheim Union High School district from 1925 to 1937 and superintendent of the Capistrano Union High School district from 1937 to 1941, when he returned to Anaheim. Dance Theater For Youngsters Begins Oct. 6 Children's Dance Theatre is being offered for the first time this year to youngsters who have had some work in traditional classical ballet or modern dance, according to the Anaheim Park and Recreation Department. Qualifications for this new program include at least one (1) year of dance in ballet or modern dance and the children must be ten (10) years old or older, besides qualifying by auditions that are to be given on Saturday, October 1 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon at Fremont Junior High School gym. Speaking to an overflow gathering of interested citizens, Dr. Richardson covered topics ranging from the necessity for improved teaching of the "basic" skill — reading to the need for a charged method of attendance accounting in the junior colleges.
