Servite Falls In Season Opener
In its first football appearance of the season Servite High suffered one of the worst defeats of its four year career against Crespi Carmelite of Encino. At the final gun the score board showed a lopsided 21-6.
In a post game interview Servite co-coach George Dena gave his impression of the Servite Showing: "All the coaches were disappointed in their (the team) playing as a whole..."
The really sore spots of the game came in the form of Servite penalties and fumbling. The Friars were offside a total of nine times. Servite capitalized on its own fumbling; recovering four for five. But the one Crespi recovered fumble proved to be the crucial point of the game as the Celts went over for an easy TD in the first quarter. From this point on the game was all Crespi.
Servite, staying out of the air, completed a total of two passes for a very poor four yard gain. Terry Bealey, Servites second string quarterback made a poor shwing against heavy odds as the game progressed into the second quarter.
The Celts made an early romp of 83 yards in 11 plays for their second score. Chuck Rees of the Friars pulled a spectacular interception out of the air but was pulled back on an offsides penalty.
On the otherside of half-time, Boxhorn scampered 57 yards to the Servite three, setting up Crespis' final TD.
Servite's Bill Carey in the game with an injured elbow, replaced Bealey in the quarterbacks slot and brought Servite back into the game; but still on the ground. With the spectacular running of Pete Ganahl, Chuck Rees and Tommy DeHart Servite scored its only touchdown of the game carried over by DeHart on a 17 yard drive.
After an impressive previous season in which the Friars skimed by the Celts 7-0 this years opener showed none of Servite's fabled vigor.
OCC Water Polo Prospectus-Good!
Orange Coast College's water polo team coached by swim master Al Irwin has started a grueling warmup-practice schedule that threatens to frighten the Eastern Conference challengers off before the title scraps begin.
In non-conference deep-six matches the Buc mariners have set up more four year colleges than they have ever before attempted to cram into their rigorous training schedule.
Included in the lineup are such notables as USC, Long Beach, Caltech and San Francisco State.
Coach Irwin states that more schools will be added to the list as soon as he can contact them. The reason for the take-on-all-comers attitude asserts Irwin, is because of the tremendous power and potential he feels in this year's lineup. He feels that the team would be wasting its time and not develop full power if it did not compete against some of the tougher teams.
The six returning lettermen contributing to the strength of the team are Jim Adams, Denny Gelvin, Charlie Douglas, Tom Jewell, and co-captains Ralph Rodheim and Roger Manderscheid.

Anaheim Terminates Summer Program
Most of Anaheim's Park and Recreation Department summer program terminated at the end of this month — the only two remaining being softball playoff games and aquatics.
The aquatics program this summer was outstanding. It was well received, as can be verified by the fact they were requested to add an extra "learn to swim" session at the end of the regular schedule.
Most other programs under the supervision of the men and boys' supervisor ran smoothly. Only program which did not live up to expectations was the tennis program, where the attendance ran only 60 per cent of projections.

Assistant coach Dale Wonacott who assisted Tucker at Brea-Olinda was appointed to the staff at Coast under the hearty recommendation of coach Tucker, among others.

Anderson sliced through the right side of the Don line to tally the second score on a two-yard plunge.

Batton, former Anaheim Colonist, marched for 100 yards in nine carries to lead the Don ball carriers. Charlie Davis gained 44 yards in five carries. Anderson and Pozsgai gained 37 and 30, respectively.
Skirmish
Beaty singled out linemen Ybarbo, Medley, Brown and Gary Mountz for their play in the skirmish. Marteen and Anderson drew special praise in the backfield.
Again operating from the T formation, the Dons figure to be a little stronger in the line than last year, and weaker in the back-field, largely due to the graduation of All American fullback Keith Luhnow, who moved up to the San Francisco 49ers. But Marteen is ranked a* one of the top JC quarterbacks this year, back-stopped by versile Don Orr.
Starting his fourth year with his same assistants, Beaty rates

Crescenta Drops Magnolia 6-0
Friday proved to be an evil night for Magnolia's Sentinels as they dropped a heavy season's opener to Crescenta Valley, 6-0, at La Palma Stadium.
The game's winning TD followed a Cresenta plunge of 52 yards in 14 plays as Mike Hull crowded over the Sentinels one yard line in the first quarter.
Magnolia carried an "Almost scored" to the Crescenta 35 but fell prey to downs and lost its only scoring possibility.
Magnolia plays number two against Dominguez this Saturday.
