'Buddy Beaver'
Unveiling Set
By Sturdevant
Carl E. Sturdevant, city water superintendent, will unveil a Walt Disney Studio-designed water conservation character which may blossom into a symbol of nationwide stature at the Oct. 4 Orange County Water Assn. Symposium in the Disneyland Hotel.
The unveiling will follow an address by Gov. Edmund G. Brown which will highlight a "Water Planning for Orange County's Prosperity" program at a luncheon.
The symposium, seeking solutions to the county's mounting water problems, opens at 9:45 a.m. and closes shortly after 4 p.m.
Sturdevant said "the wraps will be taken off 'Buddy Beaver.'"
"Buddy Beaver" will be the symbol for conserving water in California, according to Sturdevant.
Morning talks will feature John Toups, assistant Orange County ger; JJ. R. Lester Boyle, president of Boyle Engineering Co., and Paul Hennessy of Montgomery Engineering Co.

New Reading Consultant Is Named
Mrs. Margaret Smart, formerly of Redondo Beach City Schools, will be reading consultant for Orange County Schools, according to Linton T. Simmons, county superintendent of schools.
Mrs. Smart has served as reading consultant for Redondo Beach Schools for the past two years, often acting as consultant to surrounding school districts on a loan basis. Prior to that, she served for six years as an elementary teacher in the Redondo system.
Her duties will be to assist Orange County school districts in initiating, planning, and evaluating their reading programs at the elementary-school level.
Mrs. Smart holds bachelor of education and master of science degrees from U.S.C., and is an active member of several professional organizations.
She was born in Dallas, Texas, came to U.S.C., and never returned to the Lone Star State.
She is married to Richard C. Smart, a manufacturer's representative.
Apprenticeship Banquet Slated
The 14th Annual Apprenticeship Completion Ceremony banquet, sponsored by the Round Table of Orange County Joint Apprenticeship Committees of Labor and Management, will be held this Saturday at 7 p.m. in the Disneyland Park.

The 14th Annual Apprenticeship Completion Ceremony banquet, sponsored by the Round Table of Orange County Joint Apprenticeship Committees of Labor and Management, will be held this Saturday at 7 p.m. in the Disneyland Hotel.
One hundred seventy-nine completing apprentices from more than a dozen crafts will receive their state of California apprenticeship completion certificates at the ceremony.
It is expected there will be 600 guests — including many prominent Orange County business, government, labor, and school leaders — attending the banquet.
Aboard Radar Picket
NORFOLK, Va. — Lyle W. Swaney, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred O. Swaney of 322 E. LaVeta St., is serving aboard the radar picket destroyer USS William M. Wood, following a tour of duty with the sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean. Swaney is a machinist's mate fireman-USN.

H. W. Dahl Trust Representative
H. Weston Dahl has been named trust representative of the Orange County regional head office of Union Bank, James E. Tweedt, regional vice president, has announced.
Tweedt said Dahl will direct trust activities including counseling on wills, estates, trusts, pension and profit-sharing plans, stock transfer and registrar services for publicly-owned corporations, and management of customers' securities, loans and real estate.
A native of Shakopee, Minn., Dahl attended the University of Minnesota and received his law degree at Union University in New York. During World War II he served with the U. S. Navy in the Pacific.
Dahl is a member of the American Legion and Minnesota Bar Assn. He and his wife, Ruth, have three children, Bruce, 16, Dana, 11; Cynthia, 9. They reside at 925 Tularosa in Orange.
Disabled Vets Get Pay Hike
Jim Heim, County Veterans Service Officer, today advised local veterans who received disability compensation checks from the Federal Government not to be surprised by an increased amount on the checks received after Oct. 1.
A new amendment to the code increases the monthly payment to disabled veterans.
President Kennedy recently signed Public Law 87-645, which provides for the increase, making it effective this Oct. 1.
