Long Beach's International Beauty Congress Pageant, the 22nd annual Nisei Week Festival in Los Angeles. San Clemente's Surf Capades and Julian's Weed Show top the list of things to see in the Southland this week.
CLAREMONT: "Rancho San Juan" will be the Padua Hills Theater presentation through Sept. 8.
DEL MAR: Del Mar Race Track's annual summer program of horse racing lasts through Sept. 11.
JULIAN: Demonstrations of arrangements will be featured at the Julian Weed Show schedule for Aug. 11 through 19. Residents gather dried weeds and pods and fashion them into arrangements for display during the event.
LAGUNA BEACH: The annual Festival of Arts and Pageant of the masters will be held through Aug. 12. All events will be held in Irvine Bowl. Featured will be displays of all types of art work and annual evening presentation of "Living Picture" reproductions of the world's greatest artists' works.
Long Beach: Sixty girls from 60 countries will take part in the annual International Beauty Congress Pageant in the Long Beach Arena Aug. 9 through 19. One of the highlights will be a parade Aug. 12 in which all contestants will take part.
The Iowa state picnic will be held Aug. 11 in Recreation Park.
LOS ANGELES: The Dodgers play Pittsburgh at 8 p.m. Aug. 2; Chicago at 8 p.m. Aug. 2 and 2 p.m. Aug. 4 and 5; New York at 8 p.m. Aug. 6 and 7, and Philadelphia at 8 p.m. Aug. 8 and 9.
The Angels play Minnesota at Hall's Tower Gallery through Aug. 12.
OCEANSIDE: Annual sport fishing derby is current through November.

SAN DIEGO: The annual San Diego National Shakespearean Festival will be held in Balboa Park's Old Globe Theater through Sept. 9. Elizabethan "Pageant on the Green" with dancing will precede each performance.

The 22nd annual Nisei Week Festival will be held in the Li'l Tokyo section of Los Angeles Aug. 10 through 19. Featured will be Karate, Judo, and Kendo (sword) tournaments and a Ondo parade of several hundred kimona-clad dancing girls.
Featured exhibitions at the County Museum include an exhibit of early California lithographs, an exhibition of more than 200 works of Jean Dubuffet and a display of fine laces and embroideryes. Chamber music concerts are presented at 3 p.m. each Sunday at the Museum.
"A Trip to the Moon and Saturn" is the title of the program at Griffith Park Observatory and Planetarium through Sept. 9. The facility is open daily except Monday.

'Picnic' Cast Named By Marquee Theatre
The cast for "Picnic," The Marquee Theatre's next production, has been named and rehearsed are already underway with Roy Peterson directing.
In the cast are Bob Bartlett, Jr. of Hollywood; Pat Neisser, Newport Beach; Jacquie Moffett, Newport Beach; Jim Curtis, Orange; Mac Woolsie, Garden Grove; Ken Engle, Santa Ana; Ginny Male, Garden Grove; Louise White, Orange; Ethyl Hyde, Santa Ana, and Sally Brown, Santa Ana.
Pat Grencik will be stage manager and Sim Hubbard is in charge of set designing and building.

Michael O. Hanlon, sonarman second class, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul J. Hanlon of 1412 Kenwood, Anaheim, was advanced to the above rate on May 16, while serving aboard the destroyer USS Mansfield, homeported at Long Beach, Calif.
Rescue breathing, described as the most practical method of artificial respiration, is the subject matter of a new poster being offered as a public service by Pacific Telephone.
The water-resistant canvas poster is one and one-half feet by two feet in size. It depicts the mouth-to-mouth rescue method step by step, with illustrated instructions.
Free distribution is planned by the telephone firm to municipal swimming pools, YMCA's, life guard organizations and other groups in the county.
The information is designed to aid in saving the lives of victims of suffocation due to drowning, electroc shock, chest injuries or choking.
"We believe this poster to be a valuable contribution in the public interest," said Howard Heith of the Pacific Telephone. "We heartily endorse the project."

Army Pvt. Gery L. Sitter, son of Max R. Sitter, 829 N. Lemon, Anaheim, recently completed eight weeks of military police training at The Provost Marshal General School, Fort Gordon Ga.
Sitter was instructed in such subjects as civil and military law traffic control, map reading, prisoner-of-war control and self-defense. He entered the Army last December and completed basic training at Fort Ord.
Th 23-year-old soldier is a '1957 graduate of Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana and attended Fullerton Junior College.

The anti-submarine warfare support ship delivered over 52 tons of donated clothing, books, food and medicine to Japan, the Philippines and Hong Kong. The deliveries were part of the ship's support of "Operation Hand-clasp," a private program for destitute people in the Far East.
The Bennington participated in various anti-submarine warfare exercises with the Seventh Fleet.
