Letters to Editor...
(Continued from Page Two) throw out the Constitution, what rules will we govern by? People that want to throw away the protection the Constitution offers to every citizen in this country, for something that is unproven, or that has already been shown to be false, must need a head doctor.
I like things this country has stood for in the past. I like people like Jim Townsend that are not afraid to stand up and fight to protect the things Old Glory stands for.
For the record, I'm not rich either. In fact, my wife and I, live on a very small income, but that income doesn't come from the government. Yes, Mr. Editor, I shame those people that would give up their constitutional rights. Let's have more like Mr. Jim Townsend.

I'll give you an answer in a nutshell. Mr. Bixel: We don't agree with Mr. Townsend's interpretation of the Constitution. Your argument reminds me of the many different Christian sects, all claiming to have the true 'interpretation' of the Bible.
It is because we are so fond of the Constitution and the rights it provides for all Americans that we oppose Jim Townsend's principles.
One of the basic guarantees of the Constitution is tolerance of political viewpoints. Now, we can understand opposing communism or any political faith that advocates.
Recently you have published several letters that have expressed open doubt as to the purpose of the Conservative Council. Whether these are backers of opposing candidates or just people that make decisions without knowing the fact, I can't say. As to the council that's quite another story.
Anyone that has any interest in the Conservative Council may have all the information they desire by simply calling their office on Euclid Ave. in Anaheim. There is nothing secret or complex about the operation, and it's all there for the asking.
In this recent primary election this conservative group was just about the only organized body in Orange County. The Democrats for the most part, didn't have to put up a fight as they were only running one candidate, but the Republicans, ah, thats another story too. The Republicans should have been pouring thir heart and soul in this campaign, but they just seemed to fall apart. Now, this conservative council has gained the confidence by actually doing the work the Republican Party should have done.
I am not a member of this council, but certainly will be as soon as I return from my vacation. They have my respect and admiration and I suggest those of you that would condemn their efforts, had better take the time to investigate this fine group of people. I doubt very much if any candidate in the entire United States has ever had a more dedicated, hard working or more afford it. Nevertheless they did afford it and now they have an organization in Orange County that any candidate would love to have supporting him and one the professional politicians would give anything to control. The Council is political action in the American way.
Jim Sanderson

Los Angeles 1, Calif.
The Council is certainly political action in the American Way, and though we didn't agree with their slate of candidates, we certainly take our hats off to them for a job well done.
It is because we are so fond of the Constitution and the rights it provides for all Americans that we oppose Jim Townsend's principles.
One of the basic guarantees of the Constitution is tolerance of political viewpoints. Now, we can understand opposing communism or any political faith that advocates the violent overthrow of the government, but intimating that anyone who does not agree with Mr. Townsend and his extreme rightest doctrine is a leftist or even a communist is just a little too much.
Has it never occurred to you people that there are other interpretations of the Constitution than those you hold? If you would spend a little time studying the Constitution, instead of waving it around like a red cloth, maybe you would come to understand that since our Founding Fathers first wrote the Constitution, the battle over its interpretation has waged hot and heavy. Even the Founding Fathers themselves did not fully agree on what they meant.
The fact that the Constitution is a living document, open to interpretation and amendment, is what has made this country great. As democracies, only England and the United States have long endured; that because both our constitutions are open to interpretation.
When you people want to make it a rigid and unmoving document, no more than a piece of paper on which words are written, you want to destroy the very instrument which has provided us long life against the buffeting of history's tyrants.
That's why we are against you.

Dear Sir:
May I say just a word in defense of the Conservative Coordinating Council of Orange County.
I am not a member of this council, but certainly will be as soon as I return from my vacation. They have my respect and admiration and I suggest those of you that would condemn their efforts, had better take the time to investigate this fine group of people. I doubt very much if any candidate in the entire United States has ever had a more dedicated, hard working or more honest group of people working for them.
Yes sir, you have called the membership right, Mr. Editor, when you said there were a lot of honest, hard-working people affiliated with the Conservative Council. There are, and some of them are rich, but most of them are not, and most of the money expended in this campaign came from the ones that could least
