Rec Dept. Secreta
Busy as City Info
By FRANK EVANS
Many may say that a secretary's job is simply typing and dictation.
However, if you happen to work for the Anaheim Park and Recreation Department, you not only must know these essentials, but practically be an expert on everything from softball and baseball rules to geology.
You can expect to be asked such questions as: "Are the grunion running?" "How high is the cross bar on the goal posts?" "What is the fast pitch rule?"
These are just a few of the hundreds of questions that secretaries Ruth Wright, Louise Dawson and Beverly Stockwell have been swamped with over the past few months.
While the majority of their work consists of typing, they also spend most of their day by making out forms for the Teen-Age program, typing schedules for the 65 softball and baseball teams in the City and adding new members to the Senior Citizens Club. Their task also includes registering parties for classes in hat making, golf, children's theatre series, and answering questions on La Palma Stadium and keeping track of "who's in 'what' gym tonight?"
Even making requisitions for everything from erasers and chlorine to typewriters and tape is a part of their everyday job, and according to Ruth Wright, "We don't claim to be experts in all fields, but you would be surprised at the questions that are presented us — simply because we work with recreation."
Beverly Stockwell, who spends most of her day with the Senior Citizens Club and Men and Boys' Activities, said, "I've even been asked where one could get redwood shavings?" and "Are the tennis courts dry today?"
She added, "One lady called in and told me that there was a duck in our pool at Pearson Park. It seems that some parents buy their youngsters a duck for Easter and after a few weeks they drive by the park and drop the duck into our pool or lagoon."
Meanwhile Louise Dawson stated, "Once caller was wondering how she could get rid of rats in her Eucalyptus tree. An inquiry, 'What time is high at Corona del Mar next Saturday?' I've even received calls asking what we use to make grass so green in the parks.
Other questions that rank on the gals' quiz list include classics as: "What is the pitch rule?"; "Do you sponsor Rec Department Offers Tennis For Young, Old A three-week course in ten-sponsored by the Anaheim Park and Recreation Department, be offered this summer for youngsters and adults.
The instructions will be condensed at four centers this summer — Magnolia High, Savanna High, Western High, and Pearson Park. The class at the above location are open to all fifth through twelfth grades. Registration each center will be conducted June 18 for the first session commencing on June 18.
