Annual retail sales in Orange County rose over 296 per cent, from $250.7 billion in 1950 to $994.1 million in 1960, for the largest percentage gain of any county in California, according to a study published today by the California State Chamber of Commerce economic development and research department.
Orange County food sales increased 283 per cent over the ten-year period; general merchandise was up 443.3 per cent; and other major categories registered the following gains: apparel, 375.3 per cent; eating and drinking, 271.8 per cent; service stations and auto parts and accessories, 365 per cent; automotive dealers, 294.1 per cent; building material, hardware, and farm implements, 194.3 per cent; furniture, household furnishings, and appliances, 252.8 per cent; and drug stores, 513.7 per cent.
The Orange County survey is the latest in a continuing State Chamber program of estimated total retail sales by county for selected years. Copy of the study may be obtained from the Economic Development and Research Department of the California State Chamber of Commerce at 1000 Wilshire Boulevard, Los Angeles.
