Service Work Chases Retirement Boredom What will retirement really be like? Probably your first reaction is that it will be wonderful to have all that free time. However, many of us have a doubt, remembering a restlessness that developed a long way end or vacation. Retirement need not be uneventful. For many, helping others in their community has banished any sense of boredom. Not only does such activity keep activities, and other comm services. Not only does such activity keep time from dragging but it also gives purpose to retirement days. And the companionship involved and the friendships that so often develop are extra dividends. The service organizations are not being "charitable" in giving older people volunteer jobs. As our population expands, more and more volunteers are required to meet community needs. Retirees' help is essential to all groups serving the community. For example, some 2,000,000 volunteers serve to carry out Red Cross programs for the armed forces and veterans, the Red Cross Blood Program, health and safety courses, Junior Red Cross, and High School Red Cross activities, and other community services. The Red Cross comes retirees with their first time schedules. In addition, tires have a great sense of responsibility as well as a work in dealing with people. There are many ways in which retired men and women can participate in community service through Red Cross. Red serves on boards of directors on committees responsible for maintaining Red Cross programs. Many retirees serve as volunteers in community hospitals and institutions and on many community assignments. The choice of Red Cross volunteer activities is as wide as sonal interests and inclinations. Some persons will especially joy Gray Lady or Gray Man in which they may cheer her tallized veterans. Women who sewing may prefer produce service, where surgical dresses are prepared for hospitals or estates and clothing are made disaster victims. Others who driving may want to join M Service, which gets hospital tients and other shu-ins out fresh surroundings. Those w inclination for teaching may come first aid and water sa instructors. Autonetics Employees To Have Play Center A 20-acre integrated Recreation Center for the employees of North American Aviation's Autonetics Division will be completed and in use by late this summer. The new center is located south of Anaheim Road on land immediately east and adjacent to Autonetics Anaheim complex. The center is financed and maintained by North American Aid, a non-profit corporation whose funds are derived from vending machine commissions located in North American facilities. Most recreational facilities are expected to be completed by August and will include a unique three-section swimming pool, a clubhouse with completely equipped exercise, steam, shower and locker facilities and meeting rooms. Also included are two softball diamonds, a field house and snack bar. In addition the center will have a 35-foot circular children's spray pool, picnic area with covered shelter, a large outdoor theater with stage and equipped children's play area. Planned for future expansion is a nine hole, pitched golf course, an auditorium kitchen facilities, craft shuffle board, tennis court and shoe courts. Y-Wives Set Style Show "Fun in Fashion" is to be the theme for the Anaheim Y-Wives brunch and fashion show which will be held May 24 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Anaheim Y, located at 121 S. Citron. Local Orchestra To Change Name A resolution by the Board of Directors of the Anaheim Symphony Association empowering Mrs. T. K. Sun, president, to form an interim committee to effect a transition from the Anaheim Symphony to the Orange County Symphony Association was unanimously adopted at the Board Meeting of April 30. Acting upon recommendation of the special committee appointed to study the future of the Anaheim Symphony Orchestra in light of latest developments of other county-wide organizations and relating the situation to the ability to the county the services of the orchestra and the program which we have carefully and steadily developed in the past six years." The Orange County Symphony Board of Directors will be developed along with representative members of the Orange County community. According to Mrs. T. K. Sun, "This will make it possible to channel the excellent concert series along with the related educational programs for the cultural asset of the entire county area." Red Cross Names Volunteer Head Mrs. Marjorie Darby, 501 E. Orangethorpe, has been named chairman of volunteers for the Anaheim Chapter of the American Red Cross. Chapter Chairman R. B. Powell announced the appointment of Mrs. Darby at the monthly board of directors meeting. A resident of Anaheim for the past five years, Mrs. Darby has been active in Red Cross work here since last October. In March she was appointed co-ordinator of the Orange County Blood Center. In her new capacity Mrs. Darby will supervise volunteer service for blood, disaster home service, water safety, first aid, service canteen and publicity as well as the work of staff aides and Gray Ladies. At the present time more than 300 persons are volunteering time with the Anaheim Red Cross Chapter. But there is a need for even more volunteers "We need volunteers for all branches of the blood program, for canteen workers, staff aides and typists." Acting upon recommendation of the special committee appointed to study the future of the Anaheim Symphony Orchestra in light of latest developments of other county-wide organizations and relating the situation to the program and progress of the Anaheim Organization, the Board of Directors also approved the appointment of Mrs. Lotus H. Loudon to the Interim Committee. "The Anaheim Symphony Orchestra has been receiving increased county-wide support among its audience and its related programs such as youth auditions, conductor's workshop, children's concerts have always been open to county participation," reported Mrs. Loudon, chairman of the special committee. "The orchestra, of course, has always been composed primarily of Orange County musicians who come from throughout the county to participate in the weekly rehearsals."
