(Continued from Page One) to the importance they attach to getting you as an individual, to try their particular stand. A carefree, irresponsible way of life is what attracts most permanent carnival workers. But just the same they feel the bite of economics. The big difference is that they live day to day. They may make a pile today and have it blown by tomorrow. Or they make a bundle during a season and have it shot by the following season. Money has no particular significance to them because like all hustlers, they have the utmost confidence that there is plenty more where the last came from. If they trick and cheat you, it is not so much that they are inately dishonest as it is that they just don’t have the same regard for money and the boarding of it as most people do . . . like I said, there is always more where the first came from. They actually live by a different social standard. There is a definite class realization. They feel the difference between their class and the ‘square john’ culture as sharply as the ‘square john’ senses a difference between his culture and the culture of the Watusi . . . and have as little understanding or desire to understand. I have known, intimately, men who have worked in circuses all their lives . . . or on some similar quasi-legal hustle, and the favorite topic of discussion is how they have bilked some sucker. But the most appealing part their way of life is their and complete loyalty to other their class. A typical exam their willingness to become involved in a fight even means a person’s loss of bus when one of their own is then ened in a fight by a ‘s john’ who might have not so lightly to being cheated.
