WATER, WATER, water everywhere, W. D. Pickerel complained to the City Council Tuesday. Pickerel charged that the council and city have failed to provide adequate drainage in the west Ball Road area, bordering on Stanton, and that most of the property, including his chicken farm and others, are underwater. ORANGE SPOTLIGHT
BY BOB ABBORENQ
Orange County old-time residents are probably quite familiar with the Pike Amusement Park in Long Beach But for a newcomer like myself it proved to be an experience worth remembering.
As far as amusement parks go, the Pike has no special appeal to any one who has been to Riverview Park, Chicago, or the New York State Fair Syracuse, but all in all, it is a more than adequate park of the type.
For me, its special significance was the recollections I was able to drum up regarding Riverview and the New York State Fair as a kid...and, of course, the fact I was in the company of a pretty young lady.
Any kid who has grown up on the North Side or Chicago can tell you all about Riverview Park about the happy, carefree summer days and the deliciously thrilling prospect of a ride on the bob sled or the Blue Streak.
The same holds true for any kid who was rainec within 200 miles of Syracuse, in central New York.
But as much fun as recollections are, they are nothing compared to the real thing. And I was able to thoroughly enjoy our inspection of the Pike for the simple experience itself.
A carnival or amusement park is like another world. The people who run the concessions and rides are as completely different as night is from day.
When they call to you "Hey, bud, how about taking a couple of shots...win a teddy bear for the girl friend" it is as much a matter of life and death to them as it is with you when you ask the boss for a raise.
And if they sound a little bored, don't let that fool you as (Please Turn to Page 6)

Trash Program Faces Battle From Citizens
Passage of new trash collection methods was postponed for another week — to Tuesday.
But Anaheim residents threaten to make easy passage difficult for Thornton Piersall, public works director, and the City Council. Letters have been coming into the Public Works Office and to the attention of the council.
Biggest point of contention is the proposal that the city purchase durable plastic trash containers and that the containers be made available to residents on a rental basis . . . trash collection fees would be increased a small amount each month.
Residents claim many have adequate containers and that cost of the containers is too high.

Charges City With Laxity
equate W. Ball Drainage
One of Anaheim's fly ordinance beleaguered chicken farmers struck back at the city Tuesday during the evening session of the City Council.
W. D. Pickerel, operator of a chicken farm on west Ball Road, adjacent to the Stanton city limits, charged the city with failure to provide adequate drainage on his farm and those of his neighbors.
Pickerel addressed the council following passage of the revised City Fly Ordinance which provides for stiffer action against chicken farmers and others who maintain potential fly breeding areas.
"How are we expected to keep conditions when the land is flooded with water from the recent plotted. He referred to work presently being done on the drainage at Ball Road, between Dale and Brookhurst and that completion of the project was not expected for at least another year.
Councilman A. J. Schutta concurred with Pickerel, recalling an inspection he made of the area recently.
"Chicken farms should not be within the city limits," Pickerel repeated. "We would like to develop our property and get rid of our chickens, but how can we develop with such poor drainage? We pay taxes just as everyone else does, but as far as the city providing adequate drainage in our area, we're left out in the cold."

Support for Regional Park Urged By County Supervisor Candidate
John Dean, 2nd District candidate for the Orange County Board of Supervisors, today called upon "thought leaders of the area to stop stifling support" for a West Orange County regional park.
"Wayne Reedstrum and Herb Eggett of Anaheim have been doing a great job in coordinating this project but they need a greater support than what has been given them," Dean said.
Dean, Garden Grove city councilman, said the entire project is in jeopardy because several "thought leaders are so frightened of the financing that they won't back the basic concept."
Dean urges an orderly program of first giving full backing to the basic concept and "then go to work on the site and the financing."
Promising full support for the regional park if elected, Dean said: "Hundreds of West Orange County citizens have been contributing vast resources and time to back this project — they need support, they deserve support and West Orange County needs a regional park for its children."

ANAHEIM at a Glance
One and a half million dollar garden-type apartment development was approved by the City Council Tuesday. Plans are for 152 units on 10 acres, with one, two and three bedroom apartments. Included will be three swimming pools for residents.
Victory in the Placentia annexation battle has fanned city growth to the east a rosy red. The 18-month-old battle was settled last week when Judge Tamura ruled in favor of Anaheim. Involved is a mile of land northeast of the city, bordering on the Jefferson St. boundary.
Stanton will improve Beach Blvd. to tie in with the city’s improvements on the thoroughfare in the near future.
Strong action will be taken by the city during the next few weeks to eliminate billboards bordering on the freeways.
Public hearing on Lin-Brook Hardware’s plan to expand parking area on Gilbert St. was postponed for another week at Tuesday’s City Council meeting. Opposition to the move has not lessened.
Passage of the trash container program will not be easy. City residents are objecting strongly to costs to themselves and the city.
