NO KETCHUP NO HARMONY
By Doris Lee
By DORIS LEE
Family harmony in our house stands or falls on seemingly insignificant things. This week it was a bottle of ketchup.
Ketchup, for Chuck, means the difference between a healthy, well-adjusted life and slow starvation. He can't eat without it. It goes on everything. I think he even stirs it in his milk. And he uses extra large doses of it to disguise food he doesn't like.
That's what caused the latest discord. We were having eggs which he hates.
"Where's the ketchup?" he asked.
"We're all out," I said.
He groaned. "Forget the eggs. I'll try to choke down the potatoes."
"What kind of a meal is that?" I asked. "You have to have eggs."
"I can't eat them without ketchup," he insisted.
"Ridiculous," I said. "You're eating potatoes without ketchup. Here, take some."
"No," he said, stubbornly folding his arms.
Open Wide
Forcing food between the lips of my stomach and turning away from him. "I get the picture."
"Good," he said. "Now in view of my strong feelings don't you think it's nice of me to eat them anyway—with ketchup on them?
I nodded weakly. "Eat your potatoes."
The discussion did something damaging to the raceal. Everybody ate in an atmosphere of apathy.
Just a Cupful
"Oh, for heaven's sake!" I cried finally. "I'll get ketchup if I have to scour the neighborhood." I threw down my napkin and flounced out to the house next door.
"May I borrow your ketchup?" I asked. "Chuck won't eat his eggs without it."
They were all out. "Tell him to try chili sauce," they said.
"No," I said. "It has to be ketchup."
I tried the next house. They had it but they were using it.
"If you wait a minute," they said, "we'll all use it first and then you can take it."
I wouldn't hear of it. At the third house I hit paydirt. They had a full bottle.
"Hardly ever use it," they said.

Forcing food between the lips of a 10-year-old is a tough assignment.
"Now, see here!" I exploded. "T guess I'm still the mother around here, and if I say you're going to eat your eggs, you're going to eat your eggs." I put some on his plate.
He pushed the plate away and looked down at me. He's quite tall.
"Mother," he said patiently, "I'm not usually hard to deal with. I like nearly everything, even burned potatoes which you serve up a couple times a week. I'll even eat them without ketchup if I have to. But eggs I hate. The mere thought of them makes me ill. I mean, think of it. An egg is an unborn chicken, an unformed animal without bones or skin or muscles, nothing but—"
"Stop!" I shrieked, clutching

I wouldn't hear of it. At the third house I hit paydirt. They had a full bottle.
"Hardly ever use it," they said. "Especially on eggs. Spoils their delicate flavor. We love eggs."
I was tempted to ask them if they ever stopped to really think about eggs but decided against it. I thanked them and went home with the ketchup.
"Here," I said, thrusting the bottle at Chuck. "Now eat your eggs."
He doused the eggs liberally with the ketchup. Everybody watched him.
"I think I'll try a little on mine," said Tony.
"Me too," said Linda.
"You know, I believe I'll give it a try," said Charlie with a little embarrassed laugh.
Everybody doused the eggs with ketchup.
Absolutely insane," I said, and began eating. I pushed my eggs around with my fork. I felt slightly ill.
"Pass the ketchup, please," I said finally.
