Local Singer to Open In Beverly Hills Club
By FRANK EVANS
Gene Kent, an ex-hospital counselman, once attached to the 1st Marine Division during World War II returns to a familial beachhead this week — the stage.
The Anaheimer of 1812 Sumac who received the "Best Acute Award" in Little Theatre in 1950 for the lead in "Picnic", headlines the new "Trollly-Ho" night club in Beverly Hills this week.
It's a real good break," he said. "and I am looking forward to opening night. I've always wanted to be an entertainer."
He continued: "I realize that I'm starting the entertainment ladder to success later than others, but," he added. "If you feel that something is worth it — you don't give up the ship too soon."
Kent turned professional only two years ago, and since early 1960 has already appeared in Las Vegas, Anaheim Bowl, Harris' Restaurant and the Aztec Bowl.
The entertainment bug first hit Kent back when he was a youngster in Los Angeles. "That's when I won the Herald-Express 'Better Babies and Juvenile Contest,'" he said with a grin. "I even won a prize singing with a circus."
With the war already underway, Kent enlisted in the Navy and months later joined up with the Marines as a hospital corpsman at Guadacanal. It was while he was with the Leathernecks that he occasionally got the chance to entertain. He has been part of USO shows that had such stars as Reed Skeleton and Frances Langford.
"Miss Langford was with the Best Hope group when she flew down to sing a few songs for us," the baritone said. Kent has been with USO shows from New Caledonia to San Francisco.
Following the war, Kent drifted back to Anaheim and Fullerton. While with the Hughes Aircraft company, Kent kept his interestcouraged. I came back home and was lucky to land a spot on Vic Harris' night club show. I was ready to quit show business but Vic Harris gave me the break and confidence to 'stick' with it. It has paid off," he said.
Kent feels that '62 could be the year for going 'big time'. For within the next few months his recording of "I Wish You Love," will hit the song market.
"I hope a lot of folks in town get a chance to come out to the club," said Kent. "Also on the program is comic Buddy Lewis, songstress, Cleo Jons and pianist, Stan Seltzer. The latter artist has also played for Judy Garland and Billy Eckstein."
When asked, "Who was his most exciting audience?", Kent paused for a moment and said,
Budget Failure Stirs Analysis
By RICHARD T. HANNA
The efforts to obtain the budget for the fiscal year of 1962-63 have to this date failed to develop a budget acceptable to two-thirds of the members of the Assembly. The Republican Party, as the minority in the lower house have this year undertaken a serious, studied approach in their analysis of the Administration's proposals which add up to a substantial $2,885,000,000.
As a member of the majority party, I think I speak for a number of my fellow colleagues when I say that we are impressed and congratulate the minority in carrying out their responsibility of strongly challenging the justifications for expenditures submitted by the Administration.
This task force is, by and large, made up of sincere, dedicated re-

Following the war, Kent drifted back to Anaheim and Fullerton. While with the Hughes Aircraft company, Kent kept his interest in singing, by performing on his nights at the Anaheim Bowl. It was here that an agent, Stewart Washenson got Kent to sign a contract.
"I bounced around for awhile," he said. "Later, I joined the Anaheim Little Theatre group and was fortunate to receive the 'Best Actor's Award' in 1959. From there I received a screen test with Columbia Pictures, but personal problems at home prohibited me in 'waiting around' for a break.
He continued: "Like any entertainer, I went East to try my luck. While in New York, I appeared on the Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scout show and the 'Morrie Amsterdam's TV show.' It was through these engagements that Kent received an offer to try out for 'Pajama Game' and 'My Fair Lady.'"
I didn't get a part in either show and of course, was a bit disheartened.

"It happened a long time ago, during a Christmas week when I was with the Marines. I wasn't yet 20 years old and one night while I was in the backlines with a hospital group, a few of those tired veterans, some of whom had seen me sing in the USO shows, asked me to sing a few songs."
Kent continued: "I sang a couple of lines of 'White Christmas' and could see the loneliness in the eyes of those tough guys. They had me sing a few more songs and then gave me a real applause, — one I'll never forget.
"I know I wasn't that good, but they thought so," said Kent. "I only hope those who visit the 'Trollly-Ho', are as fine an audience — as that group of Marines."

Analysis
the program, strength and vitality of the State is unquestioned.
It is our belief that if they in their deliberations can develop demonstrable savings at a time when the resources of this state are being sorely tested, they will receive support and gratitude of a substantial number of the majority party.
If there are those within the minority caucus who seek to make of this situation a pure political and partisan show, this is doubly unfortunate as it discolors the quality of the good work being done by the majority of those dedicated to this labor and dissuades non-partisan support they would otherwise be able to solicit.
Of course, the responsibility to protect the integrity of proven programs that meet the vital needs of the people of the State, and the challenge of the growth

Of course, the responsibility to protect the integrity of proven programs that meet the vital needs of the people of the State, and the challenge of the growth which continues to plague us will set high criteria in the critical approach that the Majority Party must maintain in carrying out their obligations, also.
Both factions have at their core the desire to serve the best interest of California and if in this pursuit the Republican task force can effect an honest saving of the people's money, then as one Democrat, I would say blessings be on them.
