SIDELIGHTS Why Fix It? Get a Sponge By DORIS LEE Now the toaster doesn't work. One more item we can add to our growing list of aling modern conveniences. We also have a sick garbage disposal, a hemorrhaging faucet, a neurotic light switch, a feverish furnace, a malfunctioning sliding glass door and a crippled curtain rod. We need a handyman you say We have one. Only he also happens to be a genius at improvisation. To merely fix a broken gadget insults his creative instinct. He can fix it readily enough but it's more of a challenge to get the thing operating again by improvising. Take the garbage disposal, for instance. It buzzes when you turn the switch but it won't spin. He knows what's wrong with it. It's simply a matter of getting a new part for it. So does he? Not while you can still make it spin by sticking your hand down into it and giving it a twirl. Needless to say, he has become official spinner of the garbage. No one else is willing tot risk his own digits for the cause. Split Spigot The leaking faucet has a split personality. When you turn it on, half the water pours out where it's supposed to, the other half flows out from the spigot onto the top of the sink and onto the floor. He hose in. And soon after, a tiny hole formed at the bottom making it necessary to hold my finger over it while I brushed my teeth. He was forced to fix that. The light switch is one of those simple inventions whereby you flick it up for "on" and down for "off." It stopped going on when we flicked it up. He discovered that it turned on if you flicked it up and then jiggled it sideways. So that's how it operates — up and sideways. High Fever I really don't know what's the matter with the furnace. It stopped running one day and he did something to it that made it run again but with an added feature. It over-heated. He solved that problem neatly with a meter he uses at work for testing the temperature of transformers. He attached this electric thermometer to the furnace and left strict orders. "Check it every half hour. If the needle reaches 240 turn off the furnace." "Suppose it goes over 240?" I asked. "Then the chimney will catch fire," he said. So we checked it every half hour all winter long. Imagine turning down invitations to go out because you have to take your fur... Split Spigot The leaking faucet has a split personality. When you turn it on, half the water pours out where it's supposed to, the other half flows out from the spigot onto the top of the sink and onto the floor. He solved that problem without lifting a wrench. He handed me a sponge. "Always keep it next to the faucet so it will catch the water and keep it from dripping on the floor," he said. "And don't forget to squeeze it occasionally so it won't get over-saturated." "May I buy a pretty blue one to match the sink?" — I asked. This incidently, is the same sink that sprang a leak near the bottom one time when a bottle of lotion fell into it and cracked it. This brought the water line down to one and a half inches from the bottom, hardly enough to rinse HILGENFELD MORTUARY Your Satisfaction Our Concern 120 E. For a month will be prepared, stored in an electric cooker-freezer, and served automatically. You will clean your clothes right in the closet with an ultrasonic dry-cleaner. Entire walls will glow with electroluminescent lighting in colors which can be changed to create different moods. These new ideas in modern living depend on electricity. The electric industry continues to lead in the research to find new ways to produce and use electricity. And logically so. Electricity is our business. We have already produced it a number of new and different ways, involving the use of fuel cells, nuclear energy, thermionic conversion and magnetohydrodynamics. Whatever the source, electrical energy is limitless, and Southern California Edison will continue to bring you an abundant, dependable supply at the lowest possible rates.
