'Ain't Necessarily So,' Say Readers Dear Readers: Recently a discharged husband who signed himself "Just A Boob" asked me to print his letter as a warning to her young fellows. His wife's family lived like he said. They never sat at a table for meals—just walked and eating out of cartons and cans. Nothing in the house was or repaired. The furniture was found apart and the cracks in the walls and ceilings were a disaster. Closing he expressed the concern that girls imitate their mothers and he suggested that a young man look at his fiance's surroundings as a preview of what HIS home will be like. Since then, I've received a deluge of angry mail. The following writer requested "equal time" and I am delighted to give it. Dear Ann: The letter from "Just A Boob" caused me great anxiety and opened up old wounds. You see, Ann, I was brought up in much the same environment he described. When I visited the homes of friends I noticed the difference between their orderly well-kept rooms and our miserable dump. By the time I was 13 I was so ashamed of the way we lived I wouldn't invite anyone over. When I began to date I always tried to be picked up at a girl friend's house. When it couldn't be arranged, I'd meet the fellow at the front door and whisk him away before he could see the dilapidated furniture and the ragged, filthy curtains. Today I'm married to a wonderful man. We have three children and a beautiful home. It's as different from my mother's house as sterling silver is from chrome. I agree, Ann, environment is important, but people can and DO rise above it. And those who do deserve credit. Dear Ann: I'm glad I didn't see "Boob's" letter five years ago. It might have influenced me and I might have passed up a wonderful girl. The house he described sounded exactly like the one my wife came from. But I had faith in her. I knew she hated her environnement and I knew too that when she got lounge from 8:45, PR 4-2956. GREGG'S STEAK HOUSE — 2571 W. La Palma, Lyle Odin Trio from 8:45. Dining and dancing. TA 8-1620.
