Just Ask Me
I'm No Dummy
By DORIS LEE
I believe in learning something new every day. Even if it's not useful in your everyday life, it always makes a good conversation topic. And it puts you on an equal intellectual plane with your husband. Sometimes it even puts you a notch higher than your husband, a thrilling accomplishment.
That's precisely what I was thinking when I learned all about the big searchlight at the supermarket. I parked beside it and when I came out with my groceries the man who runs it was polishing the glass on it.
"Would you mind shining your light in the trunk here so I can see to put the groceries in?" I asked him, flashing him a smile.
"Certainly," he said, and stopping the rotating, he swung the beam downward into the trunk. He helped me pack in the groceries and snapped the lid shut.
"Gives a lot of light, doesn't it?" I commented as I watched him sit at the sky again.
"I got 185 million candle power," he said.
"Really?" I was amazed. From that little flame in there.
"That little flame isn't what hole and actually look at the arc. Then he swivled the light in several directions to demonstrate the distance of the beam, inadvertently shining it in the window of the service station across the street and arousing the attendants'ire in the process.
He lectured until my feet got cold, so I thanked him and went home bubbling with information.
"Did you know that those big searchlights aren't lighted by that little flame?" I asked Charlie as I was putting he groceries away.
"Of course I knew," he said, rummaging in one of the bags. "It's a carbon arc lamp."
"How did you know?" I asked, dumbfounded.
He shrugged. "I've always known. It's just one of those things you pick up early in life."
I looked at Tony who was peeling an orange. "You're thirteen. Did you know?"
SMART ALECK
"Sure," he said, "electric current passes through two carbon rods causing an arc which reflects off the mirror in back. The flame is merely from the gas which forms there."
I stared at him. "You started out in life knowing nothing. I was way ahead of you. When did you

That little flame isn't what does it," he said. "Below it is a white hot arc that reflects off the mirror in back. That's what does it."
FLECKERING LIGHT
"I fantasied!" I exclaimed. Here I've gone all this time believing that little yellow flames did it. And I didn't know that was a mirror back there. I thought it was a sheet of metal."
"It's a five-foot bronze mirror, optical ground."
"What makes the arc?" I asked with growing interest.
He gazed at me a moment. "Haven't you heard of the carbon are lamp?"
I shook my head. "Why? Is it something new?"
He reflected a moment. "It's been around a number of years. Would you like to know how the whole thing works?"
I nodded enthusiastically and he led me to the front where a gas ram engine was grinding away.
He described the whole work at great length but it all breaks down to this. The engine gets together with a generator and creates electricity. Inside the huge light shell are two carbon rods fixed so they point at each other about three inches apart. The electricity flows through them causing a bright white arc which reflects off the mirror.
He ditted me up so I could peer through a tiny smoked glass port-I looked at Tony who was peeling an orange. "You're thirteen. Did you know?"

I stared at him. "You started out in life knowing nothing. I was way ahead of you. When did you pass me out?" I felt kind of bitter.
"It has 185 million candle power," he went on, "and beats up to 200 degrees fahrenheit."
"Did you know the government originally owned all of them?" I asked.
"Sure," said Charlie, "they cost the government $40,000 each to build, complete with binocular mechanism."
"I'll bet you don't know how much it weighs," I snapped.
"One ton," he said.
"One and a half with the frame," said Tony.
I began working furiously, throwing the cann into the cabinet with clattering noise.
"Answer this, then," I said. "How much timberland does this man own in Canada?"
That stopped them. "How much?" they asked in unison.
"Eighty-nine thousand acres," I cried triumphantly.
They whistled.
"And did you know this old man is a retired policeman? And this job is just a time killer? And he and his wife travel every summer? And this summer they're going to Alaska? Did you guys know that?"
"No, we didn't know that," admitted Charlie.
"No, I guess you didn'," I observed smugly. "There are some things you'll never learn."

WHO SHOULD RECEIVE OUR AID
BIG BOMBERS REQUIRED
URBAN AFFAIRS POLITICS
SORDID, UGLY BAD FIGHT
Mail during the past few days has been heavy.
Most of the people who write me deal with the same subjects. So, let's dig into the mailbag and provide some personal answers.
One lady wants to know what I think about America giving or loaning more money to nations who seize or expropriate property of United States citizens or firms in those countries; or nations where American embassies and official residents and properties are stoned or damaged.
I feel it should be a rare case need where we turn the other neck and invites more insults, damage and loss of property rights. Especially is this true if in latter event adequate compensation is not forthcoming.
Widom are the embassies or the people who staff them of Russia listed as our overseas property representatives. Many nations seem to have two standards on dealing with ourselves or the sets and Communists general-purpose most minor acts are magnified and handled on a rough basis, whereas major Russian states are treated gently and with much consideration.
My opinion most nations bring our aid can and should help their masses and mobs. Mainly there have been far too many incidents of the American being torn down, ripped toads and burned.
Never in history has a country as generous and as helpful the United States. We ask and little in return for our assistance. But we do deserve to be fed with more respect. This is least eager recipients of our can extend.
Believe that our aid should be handed to those nations and cities (except in disaster assistants) who stand and work with us at least do not threaten, injure work against us and foster communist movements and rebellion. Why should we penalize friends and good nations, and ward those who oppose us or why so-called neutrality to ridicus extremes?
his efforts on this measure. Governor Nelson Rockefeller, and others, have played politics on this to the hilt.
If such a department is established, it is bound in time to transfer more local government and responsibility to Washington. Such a department will grow and grow and the costs will accelerate at a rapid rate.
The President announced that if the department were established, he would appoint Federal Housing Administrator Weaver, a Negro but a highly capable individual, as the first secretary. This meant that if the Republicans rejected his proposal, the President and the Democrats could say the Republicans were against Negores and much politics could be made of this. In fact a large number of Democrats, mainly from the South, voted against the proposal. The White House and the Democratic Party, however, will skip over this fact as they attack the Republicans on this issue.
Great Deal Different
Also President Kennedy said that before President Elsenhower established the Department of Health, Education and Welfare he said he would appoint Mrs. Oveta Culp Hobby. Therefore, Mr. Kennedy, continued, he announced Mr. Weaver's appointment in the same way. There is a vast difference and one the Republicans have not stressed. The GOP, generally speaking, is weak in rebuttal. Mrs. Hobby was nominally a Democrat and there were no race, or minority considerations involved. The appointment was not resident Lyndon Johnson will appear in a special tribute to the late Sam Rayburn, speaker of the House of Representatives who died of cancer last year. Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt will also be seen.
The stars are donating their services and funds for the network time are being contributed by outside individuals. No funds of the American Cancer Society or of the Eleanor Roosevelt Cancer Foundation are being used for the purchase of the television time or talent.

believe that our aid should be needed to those nations and allies (except in disaster assistance) who stand and work with us at least do not threaten, in order work against us and foster communist movements and rebellion. Why should we penalize friends and good nations, and ward those who oppose us or why so-called neutrality to ridicule extremes?
How do I feel in the dispute between Congress and the White House and most of the Pentagon on the issue of B-70 and other big projects? Am definitely on the side of representatives Vinson and George Congress.
Believe we urgently need more better fast high-flying, nuclear carrying bombers; more submarines equipped with advanced Polaris missiles, improved aircraft carriers, and newer naval and air power really. These are elements of both which Moscow underestimates, respects and evaluates.
A Stronger Shield is this country to remain free independent and for the free to resist Communist agonies, the American shield to be even stronger. With our protection and strength, the world would cease to expand if all would be plunged into the dark ages.
I hope Congress will push in a program for more B-70 bombers, and that we will build quickly and fill them with best trained and most dedicated young men in the world.
What about a Department ofiban affairs?
Probably has been the political and partisan project made and pushed by the newly Administration. The agent acted as a hard-nosed man and not a statesman in Health, Education and Welfare he said he would appoint Mrs. Oveta Culp Hobby. Therefore, Mr. Kennedy, continued, he announced Mr. Weaver's appointment in the same way. There is a vast difference and one the Republicans have not stressed. The GOP generally speaking, is weak in rebuttal. Mrs. Hobby was nominally a Democrat and there were no race, or minority considerations involved. The appointment was not heavily stamped with sheer politics as was the intended appointment of Weaver.
I am against transferring more and more local government to the banks of the Potomac. Such a trend is dangerous, and it is terribly wasteful and costly.
What do I think of the Floyd Patterson-Sonny Liston prize fight for the heavyweight championship of the world? I would like to see it boycotted. Barring this, I trust Patterson knocks out the giant Liston who has a long criminal record, who is a poor example to youth and who, if a champion, would be unbearable in his arrogant and bullying conduct.
GOP Committee Names Chairman
Dennis E. Carpenter, 33, Costa Mesa attorney and former FBI agent, has been elected by acclamation as the new chairman of the Orange County Republican Central Committee. The election took place at the regular monthly meeting of the Committee.
Carpenter, a graduate of UCLA Law School, succeeds C. W. Key, Fullerton petroleum executive, who resigned due to the press of business commitments.
