10—ANAHEIM GAZETTE Fishing ... ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA Thursday, March 15, 1962 Excursion Train Slated for Show A special excursion train to the National Orange Show at San Bernardino will be sponsored Sunday, March 18, by the Railway Historical Society of San Diego. About 400 are expected to make the trip, departing San Diego via Santa Fe Railway at 8:15 a.m. Route of the trip will be by way of Del Mar, Encinitas, Oceanside, San Clemente and Santa Ana thence to San Bernardino via Riverside. Information may be obtained by writing P.O. Box 9351, San Diego 9. The three "Big B's" of dep sea sportfishing — barracuda, bass and bonito — dominated the increasingly rosy picture last week along the Southland coast. The barracuda are mostly of "near legal" size, the bass running up to 5 lbs., and the bonito going as high as 7 lbs. Bill Trusty, skipper of the all-day boat, Frontier, which runs daily out of Balboa Pavilion Sportfishing, Balboa, reports a typical catch for nearly any angler these days would be two barracuda (a limit), 10 sand or calico bass (a limit), two bonito and one halibut for a 15 fish total (the daily limit). GRUNION For those of you who like to catch your fish with your hands, the grunion season is just around the corner. The first four-night run of the silvery little fish for 1962 is due to hit Southern California’s ocean beaches on the night of March 8. Runs lasting approximately one hour are expected to begin at about 11 p.m. on Mar. 8; 11:30 p.m. on March 9; 12:30 a.m. on Mar. 10 and 1:30 a.m. on Mar. 11. Pavilion manager, Art Gronsky, reminds grunion hunters that even though there is no bag limit, an angling license is required for persons 6 years of age or over. Fishing Fact — The comm Thresher Shark, whose long apparently serves as a flail scare or injure small fish, is sidered delicious and is perfect harmless to man. SCE Southern California Edison Company Runs lasting approximately one hour are expected to begin at about 11 p.m. TAGGED HALIBUT The California State Fisheries Laboratory is asking the help of all deep-sea fishermen in returning tagged halibut to a resident Fish and Game warden, or by placing a collect call to TERminal 2-7224. During the past five years the Department of Fish and Game has tagged 1,122 halibut and 579 have been recovered. The last halibut to be tagged was released a year ago near Santa Barbara. This means the recovery of any tagged halibut in the future is particularly important from the standpoint of growth and migration information. FISHING FACT — Experiments have shown that a halibut is so adept at matching the color of its background that it can nearly achieve the square-checked pattern of a checkerboard. Nor is the fish restricted to black, brown and white. It can become reddish, yellow, green or almost any shade to which it is exposed. Newly dedicated and now open to free public use are the Aliso Creek Beach coastal angling access facilities in South Laguna. The ocean-front area involved was formerly accessible only by trespassing over private property. The new access site and its facilities were developed cooperatively by Orange County and California's Wildlife Conservation Board. We also wanted someone who could typify the wholesome outdoors atmosphere. We found these qualities in Bonnie."
