Use 76 Million Gallons To Water Parks in 1961
By FRANK EVANS
Talk about watering a big lawn! How would you feel about sitting down one of these days on your back porch, turning on the faucet — and watching the water run out of the hose until the year 1976!
That's 15 years of continuous sprinkling without a break. Statistically speaking, this is how long it would take any Anaheimman to use up the total amount of water the Anaheim Park and Recreation used in watering their 12 parks last year.
In reaching this figure, Dick Kamphefner, park development coordinator, stated that between he 100-odd rotor heads and ramps installed in the average small park, a total of 66,000 gallons of water is sprinkled between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. in half-hour intervals during one night.
Then multiplying this amount by the 12 parks times 100 days the water is used during the evening to morning period, you discover that 79,290,000 gallons of water were sprinkled during 1961.
"There's more mathematics involved to account for our final figures, but one can only look and realize what responsibilities the Park and Recreation Department has in trying to keep our parks green. It takes a lot of work and the cooperation of many.
"Of course, our sprinkling system is automatic rather than manual; but, regardless which way you look at it," said Kamphefner, "79 million gallons is still a lot of water."
Fifteen years of active sprinkling may not sound so long, but, if you would stop and realize that in this time you could have watched an infant child grow up and complete his education up to his third year in high school.
So if you're one of those who becomes irritated after watering your lawn these days, stop for a moment before sounding off. If
A LITLE SPRINKLER — Steven Monczka, 17 months, thinks a those is just another toy as he looks up to Claudia Allen, 15, 1812 Sumac Lane, Anaheim. But what he doesn't know is that if he started sprinkling today, he would be as old as Claudia before he would have used up the total amount of water the Anaheim Park and Recreation used in watering their 12 parks last year. Steven is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Steven Monczka of 1808 Sumac Lane. See Story.

Chapman College will hold a seven-week Shakespeare Festival this summer, including a college credit Drama Workshop and performances in repertory of two plays, "Julius Caesar" and "Much Ado About Nothing."
Director of the Festival will be Henry Kemp-Blair of the Chapman speech and drama faculty. Dr. Herbert M. Stahl professor of drama at the University of Southern California, will be the guest co-director.
Twenty half-tuition scholarships will be available to graduating high school seniors and college students who wish to earn three units of academic credit in the Shakespeare Drama Workshop, which runs from June 18 through August 5.
The scholarships will be primarily for persons in the acting field but a few technical scholarships will be considered.
Members of the community who wish to participate in the productions, either as actors or as technical staff, should direct inquiries to Kemp-Blair.
Also included in the Festival in addition to the two weeks of performances will be special lectures and seminars open to the public free of charge. Dr. Stahl will deliver the lectures and the seminars will be led by Dr. Stahl, Kemp-Blair, and other members of the Chapman faculty.
According to Kemp-Blair, the emphasis in the workshop and other programs will be on the dramatic, rather than literary aspects of Shakespeare's works.
Several graduate students are to be invited to participate in the Festival as resident actors.
