Orange Spotlight . . . (Continued from Page One) smile. She wears her lips in a constant pursed position, almost as though she were considering each movement an action. But I do not feel that Karen is long for the night club circuit, certainly not as a supporting dancer. It is not so much that her talent is so easily recognizable as it is that she has an almost unbounding fountain of ambition — and the will and intelligence to follow it thourgh. Karen, like so many of the show people in California, is from the Midwest. She grew up and graduated from high school in Allen Park, Mich. She was raised, following her mother's death when she six, by her father, a supervisor for one of the large automobile companies in Detroit. Following graduation from high school, she left Allen Park with a school girl friend for California and UCLA. Her girlfriend held dreams of becoming an actress. During the course of the next few years, her girlfriend met a drama teacher and married him. They now live in Wisconsin, the actress career forgotten. Karen, however, held on. She is now a junior at UCLA. And although the Hollywood Twisters was her first shot at night clubs, she has been active in the entertainment field. She has appeared in several musical comedies in the L.A. area and has worked with choreographers. Her ambition is to be a musical comedienne. She majors in music, specializing on the piano. And while she admits to not having a great singing voice, she is equally confident of her dancing prowess. unfortunately the Hollywood Twisters Revue was not a howling success. And when the option was not taken up for an extra week, Karen felt the disappointment much more sharply than her more seasoned associates. The show failure, incidentally, was not due to performances by any of the girls as much as to organization and arrangement. Monday, Karen returned to her classes at UCLA, where she has had several scholarships, and the job she holds to support herself and pay her way through school. During her week in Anaheim, she was favorably impressed with the area as having a potentially great future as an entertainment center and hopes to return to one of the clubs in Orange County, preferably as a piano player. Mock Village One of the largest outdoor sets to be built in Hollywood in recent years is a $225,000, 15-acre southern village which has just been completed on the Universal back lot for use in "To Kill a Mockingbird," Gregory Peck starrer being made by producer Alan Parkula and director Robert Mulligan for Universal release. Caledonia! is a special production that presents a complete panorama of Scotland through the authentic music and dances of that colorful country. All of the principal regions of the land are represented — the border, the Southern Uplands, The Lowlands, The Highlands, and the Hebrides. Moods range from the sentiment of the beloved ballads of Robert Burns to the wry humor of Sir Harry Lauder, from the elegant country dancing of "The Duke of Perth" to the spirited flings of the Highlands, from nostalgic airs played by one of Scotlands great pipers to the festive "mouth music" of the chorus derived from early Gaelic sources. A special section of the program is devoted to songs set to poems of Robert Burna, the immortal poet of Scotland. Featured soloist's Hilda Stewart, a bonny Scottish lass with a bonny soprano voice. Two of the country's most talented young performers interpret the lively traditional dances. Margaret Gordon, who joins the company this year for its return American tour, is the 1961 British Champion Highland Dancer. Billy Forayth placed second in the 1961 World Championship Competition held in Scotland last August. Billy scored resoundingly with American audiences last season. He is "a most remarkable little bundle of thistledown," recorded one critic (Sacramento, Calif., Bee.) "He bounces and twirls, leaps with a grace any ballet dancer would envy, and his precise and flashing footwork is a marvel to behold."
