St. Jude Hospital has begun publishing its own house organ, "The Life Line." The paper made its first appearance during the Christmas holidays. New editor for "The Life Line" is the hospital's public relations director, Wilmer Meng, who joined the staff in 1961. In an introduction statement, Sister Jane Frances, C. S. J., hospital administrator, states, "We hope through this media to bring to our many associates and friends, articles, items and discussions of interest that otherwise might not be brought to their attention." She feels that there are interesting facets of hospital life that do not become known except to the very few involved in the happening. Meng brings to his position an extensive background of human relations including twenty years with the Department of Justice and its public relations program with the Bureau of Prisons. New Postage Stamp Honors Entire Nursing Profession The Postal Department has announced that a special stamp has been issued honoring the nursing profession. The stamp, depicting a young nurse lighting a candle, was three years in the making. This recognition is felt by many to be long overdue. To those who have had occasion to rely upon the services of this dedicated group, the signal honor bestowed by the special stamp is richly deserved. Among the professions today there are few that tax the physical, mental and nervous limitations more, yet offer more soul-satisfying rewards and the eternal gratitude of their subjects, than does nursing. Today's nurses are no longer the floor-scrubbing, bed-pan-handling drudges they were in years gone by but highly trained, skilled members of the life-saving triumvirate of hospital-doctor-nurse. Despite the nurses elevation to near-professional status (and the number who feel it should have full professional standing are legion) she has managed to retain that warmth and compassion that motivated those early pioneers to make nursing their life's work. The modern nurse is a miracle of self control and self discipline. As she moves in and out of patient rooms, carrying out the doctors order, uttering words of confidence, exuding good humor and patience, she may hide a heart full of personal sorrow and anxiety. She is subject to all the stresses and strains, the personal anxieties that the rest of us have. She has financial problems, marital problems, baby-sitter problems, sick children, and all the worries that constantly plague the human race. The average person finds release from pressure through rages, tantrums and plain sieges of ill humor. The nurse, however, has no recourse to these releases. When she waits into the hospital she must hold her natural urges in check, but them under a professional exterior so that when she meets the first patient she presents a picture of serenity, confidence and good humor. Because today's nurse is a highly trained professional individual; because she is an indispensable member of our community health team; because she works daily with her heart as well as her head and hands, the nation has rightly felt she has earned the honor of a special stamp. Today's nurse is well qualified to care for the lighted candle depicted on the stamp, to carry on the great traditions of the nursing profession.
