ANY FLOCKED ONES?
The vendors of Christmas trees did a lively business on Tuesday. We doubt whether in any town of double the size of Anaheim the demand for trees is exceeded. Nearly all the old settlers cling to the beautiful custom of the Fatherland and there are few homes in which the time-honored Christmas tree is not beautified and loaded with gifts for the household.
Notwithstanding the numberless home gatherings the Presbyterian church was crowded by the members of the Sunday school, their parents, teachers and friends. The tree was beautifully decorated with varieties of sweets, fruits and mementoes of affection. The arrangements were perfect, and the exercises of song, devotion and cheery remarks left nothing for further desire. All felt the spirit of the occasion. May such reasons of hilarity and good will often recur in the sequel of everyone's history.
UNSEATED AGAIN
We have to chronicle another accident arising from the prolific cause of bruises and broken bones — sliding rear seat of wagons. A B. Montgomery, father of Victor Montgomery, Esq., was riding with another gentleman, and a sudden jolt of the wagon detached the seat and threw them both to the ground. Mr. Montgomery received a severe shock, and was unconscious for over two hours. For a week he was unable to move without assistance, but he is now recovering from the effects of the fall.
SMART LADY
Mrs. Browning, late of England, the lady who purchased Col. Davis' farm, has, with her sons, traveled all over California seeking a suitable place to live. That she is a lady of discernment and good sense is evident by her choice of location.
ZANJERO???
The Anaheim Water Company will elect a zanjero on January 18th, 1879.
BEAUTIFUL BEEF
The meat market of Messrs. Look and Co. is tastefully decorated and the great beeves were good to look upon. Mary's little lamb was there, too, and a nice fat lamb it was. Let the housewife get up bright and early this morning and secure a roast worthy of the day.
STATUS SYMBOL
Messrs. Harris Bors. of San Francisco sent a box of cigars as a Christmas present to their friend, Gus Davis. It is needless to say that the quality of the cigars in superior, but their greatest feature is their length—seven inches. When inserted in a cigar holder their appearance is rather striking.

CALL IT ART
Harry Davis has in the window of his hardward house at Santa Ana—a raw-boned norse made out of ears of corn and corn husks. Harry calls it a "funny thing," but timid people call it the most awful thing they ever saw. It baffles description. Harry says the idea came to him in a nightmare, but if this is so he must have eaten something awfully indigestible for supper.
SOUTHLAND SAFARI
Peter Weisel and George Boyd returned on Saturday from a three-day automobile trip up the Santa Ana Corridor.
Men in Service
SAN DIEGO, Calif. (FHTNC)—James N. Nellesen, torpedoman's mate third class, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. F. Nellesen of 1173 Cherry Way, Anaheim, was promoted, November 18, while serving aboard the anti-submarine warfare support aircraft carrier USS Bennington, operating with the First Fleet out of San Diego.
Donald L. Nellesen, machinist's mate fireman apprentice, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alvin P. Nellesen of 1173 Cherryway, Anaheim, was graduated, Nov. 15, from the Enlisted Basic Submarine School at the New London Naval Submarine Base, Groton, Conn.
Most graduates will report to operating submarines, after which they will have nine months in which they will qualify fully as submariners and be selected to wear the dolphin symbol of the submarine service.
Louis G. Langren, son of Mr. and Mrs. Glen F. Lingren of 1675 Mells Lane, Anaheim, was promoted to aviation ordnanceman third class, USN, Nov. 16, while undergoing training in the Aviation Ordnanceman School, Naval Air Technical Training Unit, Jacksonville, Fla.
Before entering the service in January 1960, Lingren was graduated from Anaheim High School.
Army Specialist Four Charles R. Presley, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter L. Presley, 11642 Poes St., Anaheim, recently participated with other members of the 8th Infantry Division and supporting units in Exercise Main Large, a V Corps field training exercise in central Germany.
During the exercise,
Specialist Presley, a gunner in Company D of the division's 505th Infantry which is regularly stationed in Mainz, entered the Army in December, 1958. He completed basic training at Fort Ord, Calif., and arrived overseas in November 1960.
The 20-year-old soldier is a 1937 graduate of Rancho Alamitos High School, Gardent Grove, and attended Orange Coast Jr. College, Costa Mesa.
WESTERN PACIFIC (FHTNC)—Eugene J. Sweeney, seaman apprentice, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. William J. Sweeney Jr. of 2532 Greenleaf Ave., Anaheim, is serving aboard the heavy cruiser USS Los Angeles, now on duty with the Seventh Fleet in the Western Pacific.
Yule Phone Calls Expected Heavy
A record of 77,000 out-of-state long distance telephone calls is expected to be made in Orange county on Christmas Day. This is a 20 per cent increase over last year, according to H. R. Heth, local Pacific Telephone manager.
Christmas is the year's peak volume day. The anticipated figure for out-of-state calls compares with a daily average of 20,000.
What can you do to help get your out-of-state Christmas call through? Mr. Heth suggests:
1. Call by telephone number.
Get it in advance if possible.
2. If possible plan your tele- corn husks, Harry calls it a "funny thing," but timid people call it the most awful thing they ever saw. It baffles description, Harry says the idea came to him in a nightmare, but if this is so he must have eaten something awfully indigestible for supper.
SOUTHLAND SAFARI
Peter Weisel and George Boyd returned on Saturday from a three-day automobile trip up the Santa Ana Canyon to Rincon, Corona and Riverside. They returned by way of the San Gabriel valley; passing through Pomona, Azusa and other places. They visited Los Angeles and report having had a way up time.
UP IN THE WORLD
Arch Hollinsworth has taken a position in the art department of the Los Angeles Examiner. Mr. Hollinsworth is a young artist of promise and is to be congratulated upon securing employment in an office where he may come in contact with some of the best artists in the country. Nine artists are employed upon the Esaminer.
NEW CITIZEN
Jonathan Bayha on Friday in the Superior Court renounced his allegiance to the Emperor of Germany and became a citizen of the United States. Mr. Bayha is one of our best citizens and it is fitting and proper that the elective franchise be bestowed upon him.
33 Years Ago CHRISTMAS PAGEANT
A Christmas Pageant by Ian Alexander (The Century Co.) will be given next Sunday evening, December 23, 1928, at seven-thirty, at the White Temple Methodist church by the large chorus choir assisted by various members of the congregation. About fifty persons will appear in oriental garb and the presentation is greatly anticipated. The Pageant is just off the press and has never before been given.
POTS ACTIVATED
The cold snap first of the week caused the growers in certain sections of the citrus belt to bring forth their smudge pots and keep them burning for several hours during the latter part of the night when the thermometer always falls to the lowest point.
The exercise, which involved some 28,000 troops, was designed to develop small unit leadership and test combat readiness. Friendly forces, opposed by an "Aggressor" force, and supported by both conventional and atomic-capable artillery, maneuvered in a 187 square mile area.

Polio Clinic Is Huge Success
The Polio Clinic conducted by St. Jude Hospital closed recently and has been declared "a huge success" by Mrs. Juanita Ferraris, coordinator of the clinic. Mrs. Ferraris lauded those "who gave so generously of their time and efforts to help stamp out the great crippler."
Mrs. Ferraris stated that doctors, nurse's aids and guild ladies donated their time and the hospital donated their serum, with the community receiving the benefits. The token fee of $1.00 that was charged was donated to the building fund for the new wing of the hospital.
A check of Mrs. Ferraris's report reveals that the amazing total of 983 hours was donated between March and October of this year. This was divided into 43 hours by doctors, 140 hours by nurse's aids and 800 hours by Guild volunteers, the equivalent of 123 eight-hour days.
A unique feature of the Guild program is that a record was kept of each person appearing for an inoculation. When subsequent shots were due, each person was notified by mail indicating when to appear and whether it would be shot No. 2, No. 3 or booster. A total of 6584 notices were mailed out and 244 shots given.
During the 2 year period the clinic has been in operation, a total of 25,316 shots have been given. After such expenses as cost of mailing notices were deducted from the proceeds, the Building Fund received a net of $7,809.73 for 1961. This added to last year's proceeds brings the total amount donated to the Fund to $24,460.73.
Because of the unselfish efforts of the Hospital-Doctor-Volunteer team, North Orange County should see a drastic reduction of polio incidents in the coming year. Co-chairman of the program was Mrs. Dorothy Lakeman.
Little if any polishing is necessary for silver that's used every day, and washed regularly in good hot suds. A scalding hot rinse makes silver dry faster, and speeds up the final rubbing with a soft clean towel.
