I can hardly wait for "Larousse Gastronomique" to hit the bookstands so I can run out and buy a copy.
If you haven't already guessed from the title, "Larousse Gastronomique" is a cookbook. But not just any cookbook. This tome has been described as "the mightiest, farthest ranging, most astonishing cookbook in the history of eating."
It shows you how to turn out such unusual dishes as baked bear's paws (bake in clean mud so the hair will come off; simmer in water until soft; cook with chicken, ham and sherry), lion steak and roast camel hump. There are 8500 such unique recipes to dabble around with if you happen to be bored with frozen TV dinners.
And that's not all. The book contains a special section on table etiquette to go with these dishes (it is permissible to hold the paw delicately by a toenail while slicing the meat off); a guidebook on all the edible animals in the world from sard-vark to zebu; a treatise on poisonous foods such as mushrooms, complete with full description of the speed and certainty with which you will die after eating it; and a section on wines and liquors and their effect on the liver, plus some beer-making recipes.
To top it off it contains a number of interesting stories of famous banquets down through the ages.

The general Disneyland was called by the research team for construction convention hall here.
Stanford recommended a lift with 2,500 seats. This would cost $1.8 million. All included in the report is a holding 5,000 spectators for events, at an estimated cost of million. The researchers also an exhibition area of approximately 35,000 sq. ft. would about $1 million with its parking spaces and rooms for convention use.
The research team also rallied a first class convocation facility rather than a make-cost-saving installation. The vised against a center would be a "monument type." The facility as recommende would cater to conventions 3,000 delegates. Larger conventions, it was pointed out, choose any but a metro station.
Something Sacred
"Larousse Gastronomique" treats food as something sacred. It makes garlic smell like a rose, and gives the hen's egg 351 tender, loving variations. There's even a full description on the boiling of water, something I never gave too much thought to in the past.
It took four years to translate the book from French, so we are very fortunate to have it, no matter what the cost will be. The Kennedy chef has a copy, in French, of course, and uses it all the time. I don't imagine he has trouble finding bear's paws and camel humps.
While I'm waiting for the book I've been making a few inquiries about the availability of these ingredients.
I asked the butcher if he had any bear paws. He said no, but he had some swell pig's feet, pickled or otherwise.
"Well, no," I said. "I was sort of hoping you had bear paws. I want to bake them."
Will Beef Hocks Do?
"How about beef hocks?" he asked. "I could leave the hooves on."
"No, it wouldn't be the same. Do you have camel's hump?"
"That I don't stock either. How do you prepare that?"
"You roast it. Although I would imagine it comes partially cooked, having been under hot desert suns all its life. Do you think you could order it for me?"
He pondered a minute and said, "I doubt like anything that I could get the camel humps, but I can look into the bear's paws. I might be able to get some Cali-

A representative from one of the large ribbon manufacturers will be at the meeting to show how to make Magic Bows and many variations including some flower types. He will be assisted by one or two of the members and the whole group will participate by actually making bows which they may take home. Along with the bows and ribbons will be some helpful hints on wrapping packages.
A very short business meeting will proceed the program. Mrs. Louella Carr of Santa Ana who is in charge of the Thanksgiving Charity asks that all who attend remember to bring a contribution of food for the basket for a needy family.
PBX operators in North Orange County have an opportunity to join this active group which is so interested in the welfare of girls in this line of work.

Teenagers sometimes insult her for no apparent reason, she says, but she has found the best way to cope with them is to ignore them.
Being a crossing guard, like any other job, has its ups and downs, and Mrs. Buchanan will have days when everything runs smooth as silk. The motorists are courteous and the children obedient. One little girl, she recalls, carried obedience to the extreme one day when she was late for school and found Mrs. Buchanan gone from her post. Rather than cross alone she walked all the way to Sen. Thomas Kuchel will address the Anaheim Elks lodge on Wednesday, Nov. 22 in the local observance of the national organization's Know Your America and their guests. The limit seating capacity at the lodg makes it impossible to throw the meeting open to the general public.
