GOP Associates Named
Robert S. Barnes, Santa Ana attorney and former chairman of the Orange County Republican Central Committee, was named president of the newly-formed Republican Associates of Orange County.
The election, held at the organization meeting of the board of trustees of the new Republican service group, also named as vice presidents Robert F. McCurdy, Newport Beach banker; and Robert F. Beaver, Fullerton construction executive. Secretary of Republican Associates will be Harvey Stonehouse, La Habra, while James B. Keyes, Laguna Beach management consultant, was named treasurer.
Formation of Republican Associates as a county-wide business and professional men's organization was announced some weeks ago by C. W. Key, County GOP Chairman. Trustees were elected by charter members, and include, in addition to the officers named: C. W. Key, Fullerton petroleum executive; Coalson C. Morris, Anaheim manufacturer; Walter Knott, Knott's Berry Farm; Walter B. Mellott, Newport Beach contractor; O. W. Richard, merchant of Newport Beach; Gordon X. Richmond, Orange attorney; Frank Booth, Laguna Beach manufacturing executive; T. R. Peterson, Santa Anausinessman; Clarence Brown, developer of Three Arch Bay; Ralph Kiser, utilities executive of Huntington Beach; and Harry Rinker, Garden Grove developer.
Republican Associates will act as a supporting arm of the Republican organization in Orange County, and will rely for its membership on the business and professional community. It will feature quarterly meetings with speakers of national prominence, and a monthly "Inside Information" newsletter. This newsletter will be circulated only to members, and will contain facts not available through other channels on political happenings at the Federal, State and County levels.
President Barnes predicted that the organization will pass the 1,000 mark soon after January 1, 1962. He urged all interested persons to contact Republican Headquarters, KI 7-63 for membership information.

City Man Commands Unique Grounds
First Lt. Richard B. Hathcock, of Anaheim, commands a unique organization at the U.S. Army Training Center, Armor (USATCA), Fort Knox, Ky.
Since last July Hathcock has been platoon leader of the Training Center's Demonstration Platoon, a unit of 18 "spit-shinned" enlisted men charged with the responsibility of furnishing color guards, firing squads for special ceremonies, and other details for official functions at the Kentucky fort, as well as for events in surrounding communities.
Color guards consisting of four to six "demonstrators" participate in official appearances of the USATCA Commanding General and Deputy Commander, and numerous other events at the training center, including retirement ceremonies and change-of-command ceremonies. Other duties regularly performed by this sharp outfit are raising the flag at reveille and lowering it for retreat at USATCA headquarters, and performing for important visitors on tours of the training center.
Hathcock's charges often travel hundreds of miles to take part in such events as anniversary celebrations and military funerals. A recent example is a trip taken to Muried, Ind., where the unit performed at a monastery's centennial celebration.
Hathcock was commissioned in the Army last year upon graduation from the University of California, where he was a member of the Reserve Officer Training Corps. He is a graduate of the Army's Airborne and Ranger schools.
He assumed his present position as commander of the "Demo" Platoon from an assignment as a company commander in the training center's 15th Training Regiment.
The 23-year-old officer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard V. Hathcock, 1202 Kenwood Ave., was graduated from Anaheim Union High School in 1955. He is accompanied at the Kentucky fort by his wife, Diana.

GIANTS OF CALIFORNIA
GIANTS OF CALIFORNIA
NATION'S LARGEST OBSERVATORY * * NATION
To judge a giant's strength, look at its foundation. Even earthquakes can't faze the 200-inch, 500 ton Hale Telescope of Mt. Palomar, the nation's largest observatory. Its mighty foundation is a 25-mile deep, natural block of granite. California Federal Savings, too, draws giant strength from a massive and monetary foundation. Over $690 million in assets...largest of any federal savings...safeguard the 180,000 savings accounts at California Federal. And its reserves are far above legal requirements. For over 36 years, seasoned management policies have passed all tests in the proving grounds of depressions, wars and booms. And California Federal has another powerful strength: its middle name is Federal. Federal means chartered and fully supervised by the U.S. Government. Federal means savings accounts are

College Makes Property Plea
Request that the federal government abrogate the restrictions on all of the 243.19 acres of Orange Coast College property is being made by the college board of trustees.
The board's previous request for abrogation of a portion of the property along Harbor Blvd. was denied by the government. The government indicated it would abrogate restrictions on the entire property.
Should the government abrogate restrictions on the entire property, as it has indicated it would do, it would allow the board of trustees to purchase from the government the unamortized portion of public benefit allowance on the total property.
Purchase prior to March 19, 1962 would be at $480 per acre for a total of $116,711.20, while purchase after March 19, 1961 would be at $450 per acre for a total of $109,435.50. Purchase would give the district clear title to the property which was granted to the college following World War II.
In other action, the board of trustees made application to the state for a $85,307 grant under the Junior College Capital Outlay Tax Relief Bill. The college must match the money with four times the sum, or $341,288.
The grant may be used to repay bonds, for acquisition and improvement of sites and for planning and construction of buildings.
The board also took action to employ architects Blurock and Ellerbroek and Associates to prepare plans and specifications for a business data processing laboratory and a wing addition for the Art Center.
Estimated cost for the business data processing laboratory is $78,000, while estimated cost for the Art Center addition is $125,000.
Completion target dates are Sept. 1, 1962 for the business data processing lab and Feb. 1, 1963 for the Art Center wing.
