New Building Opens
E. H. Sargent and Company's new western division office warehouse building, just completed on a two-acre site in Anaheim, will contain more than 38,000 different items of scientific equipment, apparatus and chemicals, according to Thomas Mints, president of the 109-year-old firm.
The facility, located at 1617 Ball Road, consists of a 21,000-square-foot warehouse, a 5,000-square-foot office area and an ample-sized lobby for reception of visitors. The building is constructed of concrete tilt-up panels fashioned at the site, buff-colored face brick toward the street side of the office area and Palos Verdes stone used as facing for the lobby. The office area has been designed to speed the flow of paper work from receipt of order through checking of stock cards to forwarding orders to the warehouse for shipping. Paper work need move only 30 feet, and orders will be shipped within 24 hours. The color scheme of the office is brown and tan with buff and blue walls.
The warehouse itself features modern adjustable shelving on which stock is set up numerically by catalog number. The Anaheim office will do all its own purchasing and will maintain balanced inventories of all 38,000 items. Provision has been made for storage of acid and flammable chemicals in special set up for immediate demonstration. Customers may try out equipment in the demonstration laboratory before purchasing. Some of the equipment on display will include Polarographs, titrators, potentiometric recorders, gas chromatographs, analytical balances, microscopes, spectrophotometers, and other laboratory devices.
For the convenience of employees, a large walled-in patio has been provided on the building's east side adjoining the employee lounge. The patio features picnic tables, umbrellas and lounge chairs, and, like the entire site, was landscaped by Raymond E. Page of Beverly Hills, noted landscape architect.
A 60-car parking lot for visitors and employees is located on the building's west side near the front, with loading ramps for trucks located farther to the rear.
In checking over the new western division headquarters, John Manypenny, division manager, said: "This structure is admirably suited to carry on the Sargent tradition of service to science. We take pleasure in announcing the availability—on a local basis—of Sargent services to all the laboratories in the growing west."
