New Post Office Set for Anaheim
Progress toward construction of a new and modern post office at Anaheim was announced today by Postmaster General J. Edward Day.
President Kennedy has called for an accelerated postal construction program this year as a spur to the economy, the postmaster general said. "The post office that will be constructed here will not only benefit the community by way of more efficient postal service but will help implement the President's program."
Day said the Post Office De-

department is seeking competitive bids to build and lease the new post office to be located on the west side of Loara St., approximately 375 feet north of Crescent Ave. The site contains approximately 161,000 square feet. The building will contain 40,560 square feet of interior floor space and ample paved parking and maneuvering areas are provided.
Included in the project also will be a lubritorium for the servicing of postal vehicles.
A downtown classified station is scheduled to be established in the Anaheim federal building in the quarters which have been used by the Post Office Department. This will add to the over-all postal servicer available for the residents of Anaheim.
Under the Department's commercial leasing program, the site will be assigned to the successful bidder, who will purchase the land, construct the building according to departmental specifications and rent it to the Post Office Department for a basic period of 21 years, with two options to renew the lease.
The Department's capital investment will be limited substantially to postal equipment. The building will remain under private ownership, with the owner paying local real estate taxes.

INFLUENZA ERIDEMIC PREDICTED
Doctor Luther T. Terry, Surgeon-General of the U.S. Public Health Service, has predicted that there will be a new influenza epidemic in the United States this fall and winter.
He urged immediate vaccinations for people over 65, pregnant women and persons with heart disease and other chronic illnesses.
"We are probably due for some Asian flu outbreaks, since they come in two- to three-year cycles," Doctor Terry said, "and we are overdue for Type B flu outbreaks which come in four- to six-year cycles."
More than 86,000 people in the three most susceptible groups died from influenza between September 1957 and March 1960. Asian flu has been dormant in this country since then. It has been more than six years since Type B flu has been widespread.
Both types of flu were prevalent in other countries in 1960-61, especially in England. In 1951, when England had a similar epidemic, flu reached this country the following year, Doctor Terry noted.
The USPHS is alerting physicians, State health officers and welfare agencies to include flu immunizations in their public assistance medical care programs.

ANAHEIM COMMENT

A survey by United Press International of voting officials
revealed the registration change in 13 counties.
Knight, candidate for governnor against former Vice President Richard M. Nixon, made his appeal in statewide television for registration change last Sept. 27.
Knight said that "since cross filing has been abolished, many thousands of Democrats who do not favor Gov. Brown or Nixon are trapped and cannot vote against Brown or Nixon unless they register as Republicans before April 12, 1962. I think many Democrats and Republicans will approve this freedom of choice."
Ben Hite, Los Angeles County registrar of voters, said,
"There is a definite swing going now."
Hite, whose county has just over 40 per cent of California's voters, said a two-day spot check on Oct. 6 and Oct. 9 showed that 8.2 per cent of all voter registrations were switches from Democratic to Republican.
On Oct. 6, he said, 577 persons registered to vote and 41 of these were switches. On Oct. 9, 53 of 567 registrants changed.
Voting officials in San Bernardino, Riverside, San Joaquin and Sacramento Counties also said they noticed an increase in voter changes from Democratic to Republican.
Riverside Registrar C. W. Hodges said a spot check of 100 registrations in the first week after Knight's Sept. 27 broadcast showed "about half" of them were changing their af-filiation, "but since that there been no signi-change that we can see."
San Bernardino official nor Felton said that follow-Knight's plea she receinumber of telephone calls Democrats asking if they write Knight's name o-Democratic ballot. relation, "but since that time, there's been no significant change that we can see."
San Bernardino official Eleaor Felton said that following night's plea she received a number of telephone calls from democrats asking if they could write Knight's name on the democratic ballot. She said she told them 'no' of course, because that would amount to loss filing," which has been repealed in California. She said "quick check" of 1,000 registration affidavits on hand allowed that three in that group and switched from Democrat Republican.
In San Joaquin County, votig official Cliff Bromme said Democrats and one Repubcan switched registration in September.
Sacramento County Clerk C. LaRue said 50 Democrats in its county switched affiliation one week. He said the changes have been "a few more than normal. The only thing I can attribute it to is Knight's suggestion."
Ralph Andrews, an official in the "Knight for Governor" headquarters, said a deputy voter registrar appeared at a meeting in Knight's Los Angeles headquarters last week. "Out of about 200 in attendance, there were 80 Democrats among them and all 80 changed registrations on the spot."
Andrews said, "We expect a minimum of 200,000 Democrats to change their registration." This estimate, he said, was based on "the number of Democrats in the state who already have stated preference for Knight in previous elections and on impartial polls."
