A fourth "R." for religion, is part of the study program for 2,000 pupils in Anaheim Elementary School District.
This supplement to the traditional "three Rs" could also stand for Released Time, which is supported by the Anaheim-Western Communities United Fund drive.Released Time provides religious instruction for fifth and sixth graders whose parents give their approval.
The program has been offered in Anaheim since 1945, when the California Education Code was amended to permit local school boards to release children from school to receive religious instruction.

Roman Catholic children are met at the school by a sister or lay teacher and escorted to a residence hear the school where they receive graded courses in religion approved by the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine. Sister Henrietta O.S.J. supervises Roman Catholic classes.
Protestant children are instructed in one of four mobile classrooms parked on the street by the school.

Western Communities Oral Fund drive.Released Time provides religious instruction for fifth and sixth graders whose parents give their approval.
The program has been offered in Anaheim since 1943, when the California Education Code was amended to permit local school boards to release children from school to receive religious instruction.
The maximum time allowed for this purpose is one hour a week. In Anaheim, a 45-minute class is offered weekly.
Not a cent of school district tax money is expended on the program, which adheres strictly to America's traditional separation of church and state.
About 1,500 Protestant children and 500 Roman Catholic youngsters are receiving Released Time instruction this year.
In the case of both groups, the instruction is given off the school property.
School principals do cooperate, however, to the extent of sending home cards for parents to register their fifth or sixth

Mrs. Ruth Jones is supervisor of Protestant instruction. The non-denominational curriculum, rather than duplicating Sunday School lessons, offers a special course of Bible study. Fifth graders study the life of Christ; sixth graders, the early church in the first semester and heroes of the Old Testament in the second semester.
"This is a cooperative endeavor on the part of the churches, the school district and the city," points out Shanks.

Army’s Salvation Army Unit Grows
Family newly-arrived in Texas needs till the bread-winner re-receives first pay check.
Do they turn? The Corps of the Salvation will assist them with clothing and even lodging if did 161 such families and more this year of the recession.
Aid, really comes from family’s new home town. The Salvation Army is one health and welfare agency reported by the Anaheim Communities United Service Feel that the Salvation is a name that people of when they're in troubles Lt. Frank Brown, an ordained minister who has been commanding officer of the Anaheim corps since its founding in 1957.
That trouble rears its head in a variety of forms. It may be a matter of life or death. Or it may just be loneliness gripping an old man at a rest home.
Whatever it is, the Salvation Army faces up to the problem and tries to solve it, backing up the spiritual approach with practical steps. A three-pronged “attack”—spiritual, moral and physical—has been a tradition with the Salvation Army since Gen. William Booth founded it in 1865.
Lt. Brown has held out the lifeline and seen it grasped four times in his four years in Anaheim.
In each case, a person was contemplating suicide. The lieutenant and his wife, Joy, went to the home of one woman who was very despondent, stayed with her through most of the night and finally convinced her that suicide was not the answer. Then they followed up and helped extricate her from legal and financial tangles.
Lt. Brown's home phone number is on file with the police department. He's one of their "emergency" arms and it is not unusual for him to be routed out at 2 a.m. to cope with a personal crisis.
Most of the Salvation Army's local service, however, is more kindly than it is dramatic. The Anaheim corps served meals to 253 transients in 1960 (referenced to Hospitality House in San Ana but paid for by the Anaheim corps).
It distributed 1,360 gifts a year during monthly visits to the lonely, aged folks at homes in the area. Last Christmas, the corps distributed baskets to needy families, cluding 94 with grocery checks ranging from $7 to $15. In addition, 3,005 toys were given out; musical groups recruited schools were taken to entertain rest home residents and party was given for 385 youngsters.
These programs are directed from corps headquarters in old church building at 129 Cypress St., where religious services are also conducted.
