The blast was triggered by congressman James B. Utt in registered letter to Morrison, mailed from the Capitol. Utt denied to the reporter either past or present membership in the John Birch Society, and demanded a published retraction of that portion of the feature in which the Congressman was listed as a Birch member. "It would have been perfectly simple," said Utt, "for you to have determined this by a telephone call to me." "However," wrote Utt, "you appear so dedicated to carrying out the 'anti-anti-' communist program of Gus Hall, chairman of the Communist Party of the U.S.A., that true facts are of little consequence to you." Utt explained to Morrison that in August, 1960, he (Utt) had written to Robert Welch telling him that some of his (Welch's) intemperate statements would reflect on Birch members, making the Society vulnerable to a massive left-wing attack. Reiterating his personal opinion of the John Birch Society, Utt said, "I fully support the patriotic goals of the John Birch Society but I do not agree with the statements made by Welch in the 'Politician'."
