SECTION B. PAGE 1
Canyon Women Tell of Cancer Cure
The drama of one life saved by the General Federation of Women's Clubs and the American Cancer Society has already happened in Orange County, according to Mrs. James Craig of 849 Joann St, Costa Mesa, ACS Education Committee chairman for the project.
Last October members of the Canyon Women's Club—following this pilot program designed to get every club member to have a checkup and a "Pap" smear examination — saw, as their monthly club feature, the ACS movie "Time and Two Women" explaining cancer of the uterus.
A physician representing the Orange County Branch of the American Cancer Society told of the importance of acquiring the life-long habit of annual physical and cancer examinations.
And Mrs. Kenneth Hartle of Orange, 1960 president of the club, urged her members to April 1962, have been sent to all 26 senior and 18 junior women's clubs in the Orange District of the General Federation of Womens Clubs and will affect more than 2,000 women in the immediate area.
Republicans Plan Three-Day School
Three-day school of practical politics for college-age Young Republicans is scheduled for Sept. 7 through 9 in Newport Beach.
Congressman John Rousselot, dynamic California representative from the 25th District, will be the featured speaker at the banquet climaxing the Leadership Training Institute. The banquet, open to the public, will be held Sept. 9 at 8 pm. at Knott's Berry Farm.
The American Legion Hall in Newport Beach will be the center of activities for the school, sponsored by the California Young Republicans College Federation.
A physician representing the Orange County Branch of the American Cancer Society told of the importance of acquiring the life-long habit of annual physical and cancer examinations.
And Mrs. Kenneth Hartle of Orange, 1960 president of the club, urged her members to reach for a 100 per cent participation in this project.
When, at the club's November meeting, not one member reported having had the "Pap" smear Mrs. Hartle with her twin sister, Mrs. G. W. Garrett of 707 Poplar Pl., Anaheim, made a double December date with their doctor to set an example and to "practice what we were preaching."
Mrs. Garrett—now president of the Canyon Women's Club which has become the first women's club in the nation to reach a 100 per cent membership having had the "Pap" smear along with a physical examination—said that of the 32-year-old twin sisters she was the one "not feeling up to par."
She came through her examination with flying colors. Within two weeks Mrs. Hartle underwent surgery which resulted in the finding of a pocket of dormant cancer cells ready to multiply, just waiting for the right conditions.
Mrs. Craig, herself a cancer patient now living through the five years it will take to tell whether she will become one of the more than one million recovered cancer patients, told how, due to Mrs. Hartles knowledge and immediate action, her doctors have pronounced her 100 per cent cured of uterine cancer.
